More photos released in hunt for rioters
![]() The rioters hurled bricks and bottles at police
Police in Leeds have released photographs of 27 men they want to question in the wake of riots in the city.
Two jounalists and two police officers were injured during the violent clashes in the Harehills area of the city on 5 June. The trouble lasted for more than six hours, during which time 24 cars and a shop were set on fire as police were pelted with bricks and petrol bombs. Detectives have followed the lead of colleagues in Bradford who have released 40 images of suspects they want to quiz over rioting in the city centre and Manningham in July. Helicopter footage Police officers in Leeds, who have already questioned 12 men, are investigating more than 100 offences including public order offences, assaults and arsons. Hundreds of hours of footage from closed-circuit cameras and film taken by the West Yorkshire Police helicopter have been studied.
"These people are not supported by the local community. "We have had a great deal of support from people living in the area. "Many have come forward and given information and we would like to thank them for their help. "Our enquiries are going well and further arrests are imminent. "We would still like to hear from anyone who may have any further information and would reassure them that their calls will be treated confidentially." Violence flared The disturbances began at 2015 BST - eight vanloads of riot officers and police dogs were drafted in to disperse the crowds.
After more than six hours of disturbances, most of the rioters had dispersed by 0215 BST. It is believed the violence may have erupted in response to the arrest of a local man by police two days earlier. The disturbances - in a mixed race area of Leeds - came less than a week after racial violence flared in Oldham, Greater Manchester. Police in Bradford have now arrested 19 people and taken 500 calls as a result of the campaign.
