Barry George guilty of Dando murder

Jill Dando was one of the most popular personalities on British television. There was shock across the country when she was shot dead outside her London home in April 1999 by a single shot to the head, fired at point blank range. A year later, police arrested Barry George and charged him with murder. He has now been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The jury of six women and five men took five days to weigh up the evidence before reaching their verdict. By a majority of 10 to one they found 41 year old Barry George guilty of murdering Jill Dando. The jury had not been told that George had a history of assaults on women including a conviction for attempted rape.

Opening the case for the defence, Michael Mansfield QC said Jill Dando was killed by a professional hitman, and that the case against her alleged killer was "hanging by the merest of threads".

A private funeral for a public personality

The funeral of murdered BBC presenter Jill Dando heard of her kindness, warmth and "sensitive humanity". The service took place in her home town of Weston-super-Mare in Somerset. Hundreds lined the streets to pay their final respects to one of the town's most famous daughters.
