South Yorkshire has a high teenage pregnancy rate
Five men have been arrested by police in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, after a 12-year-old girl became pregnant.

DNA samples have been taken in an effort to find out which one of them is the father.

The Crown Prosecution Service will consider possible rape charges when the results are known because the law does not recognise that a 12-year-old girl could have consented to sex.

The girl, who is now 13, is being supported by social services staff. She intends to keep the baby, which is due in the autumn.

Forensic tests

A spokesman for South Yorkshire police said: "Rotherham CID and Rotherham social services are investigating a case relating to the pregnancy of a 12-year-old girl.

"Several people have been arrested and interviewed and released on police bail pending forensic tests and advice from the Crown Prosecution Service.

"Charges of rape may eventually be laid as it is not possible for a girl of 12 to give consent to sexual intercourse."

A spokesman for Rotherham Council said social services were working with other agencies to provide support to the family.

Jailed

"The matter is the subject of a police investigation and we are assisting in any way we can," he added.

South Yorkshire has some of the highest rates for young pregnancies in the country.

In 1999 a 12-year-old girl gave birth in the bathroom of the family home in Rotherham, having conceived at the age of 11.

A 25-year-old man was later jailed for having unlawful sexual intercourse.

Also in 1999, a 12-year-old girl became pregnant by her 14-year-old boyfriend in Sheffield but the Crown Prosecution Service ruled a prosecution would not be in the public interest.
