A 37-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a slaughterman at Great Orton Airfield near Carlisle.
Steven Smart, 28, from St Leonards, East Sussex, died in Newcastle General Hospital on Thursday evening. Keith Hubbard, from Atherstone in Warwickshire, appeared before magistrates in Carlisle on Friday afternoon. Mr Smart, a former butcher, had suffered serious head injuries after an incident with a bolt gun at the Great Orton mass burial site on Wednesday. He was one of many slaughtermen drafted in from across the country to help with the mass cull of livestock to fight the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Another man was treated for shock at Cumberland General Infirmary following Wednesday's incident. The case was adjourned until 12 April at Carlisle Crown Court.
