The father of murdered 10-year-old Damilola Taylor has paid an emotional visit to the spot where his son was killed.

Amid poignant scenes Richard Taylor, who flew into the UK from Nigeria on Friday, wept at the scene of his son's death.

Please sleep in the heart of our Lord Jesus Christ

Family tribute
Mr Taylor visited the scene of the murder in Peckham, south London, with his wife Gloria - Damilola's mother - and other family members on Saturday.

The group, who were given private time away from the gaze of press and onlookers, left flowers at the scene.

Their tribute read simply: "Please sleep in the heart of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Superintendent Rod Jarman, who was visibly moved by the scenes, said: "This was obviously deeply distressing for the family and we though it best to leave them to their own space.

"They are extremely upset. If my own son was killed I would want to know where he died."

At the tower block where Damilola bled to death on Monday police officers remain in place.

Access is carefully controlled and as the grieving family arrived in cars journalists, photographers and camera crews were kept well back.

Community leaders were present as the group gathered themselves for the visit.

At one stage, a woman appeared to gesture at the point where Damilola staggered to before he collapsed with fatal wounds.
