MP3 download offers Ashes memento
Fans celebrate England's Ashes victory

Cricket fans have the opportunity to download a slice of history with BBC Radio Five Live offering audio highlights of the 2005 Ashes series.

The audio clips include the moment when England regained the Ashes, plus a four minute collection of other key events.

Cricket is enjoying a renaissance online while football is in decline.

Net measurement firm Hitwise found that cricket-related searches outstripped football at a time when both national teams are under the spotlight.

Cricket crazy

While the England football team struggles through its World Cup qualifiers, the nation's interest has turned instead to the exciting performances put on by its cricketers.

Cricket-related searches outstripped those for football by 55% during the 3rd Ashes test at Old Trafford, according to Hitwise.

Cricinfo was the top cricket website, claiming 35% of all cricket traffic.

But the BBC News website beat Channel 4's site as the top destination for cricketing news, despite the fact that Channel 4 was televising the event.

Relive the moment

The clip from Five Live is something of an experiment for the station.

"We would have loved to do something like this before but we have to be guided by sports rights and this is the first time they have been granted," said Brett Spencer, Radio Five Live's interactive director.

Following the rugby World Cup, the station was inundated with requests for the moment Jonny Wilkinson secured victory with a late drop goal, he told the BBC News website.

"We are hoping an awful lot of people will download the Ashes clip as a souvenir of the series. It is exciting to listen to and helps fans relive what is the sporting event of the summer," he said.

Fans can download the clip as an MP3 audio file from BBC Radio Five Live from September 13.

It can be played on computers, digital music players and mobile phones.
