Ask the expert: Is your pension scheme being closed?

TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber
The TUC General Secretary, Brendan Barber stands by for your questions

More and more employers are making tough decisions about company pension schemes.

With many schemes closing, these decisions are now affecting existing staff, not just new employees.

Closing a scheme is not automatic though. The Pensions Regulator oversees rules which mean that, among other things, scheme members must be consulted before a scheme is shut.

In most cases however, if a scheme is closed, you will be offered a worse pension deal than before.

So, what should you do if your employer wants to save money and plans to close your scheme? Is it too late to do anything?

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, will be answering a selection of your questions regarding this issue. The answers will be published on Monday 8 March 2010.
