A series of local postal strikes are continuing to take place across England ahead of the start of an official ballot for a UK-wide national walkout.

BBC website readers have been explaining how the strikes are affecting them.

We are a small independent retailer and about 90% of our sales are through Amazon and Ebay. The items we send out are mainly 'letter post', which restricts us to using Royal Mail. We are happy to be receiving many orders but we are now finding that customers are charging back items on their credit cards as they are not receiving their items in good time. I understand the plight of the Royal Mail workers but please, please, sort it out. You are destroying my business!

We are in a recession and cuts are inevitable. I have been made redundant myself in the past and it is a terrible thing to happen. But strike action cannot justify the disruption it causes to householders and businesses, particularly with public sector employers such as Royal Mail. Any worker that is happy to cause such major disruption should be sacked.

Very little mail for weeks: some small items (odd letters) are arriving sporadically. Waiting for parcels/packets for ages. Car Tax has not arrived despite ordering it on 27th August. Waiting for new bank cards that usually arrive by post. I have no confidence in the postal service and fear that mail is just being dumped or purposely lost.

Lots of payments have been delayed getting to us which puts extra strain on our company. I am sure companies who have very tight cashflow suffer this strain much more. With all the businesses shutting down in our area, surely the demand for post has also decreased. I feel that the postal strike is detrimental to the economy whilst proving that the postal system is in meltdown.

People striking because they have jobs? Stopping the rest of us from maintaining our jobs? It seems sensible to assume that continuing industrial action will make it more likely that we will get used to using electronic means of communication for day to day processing, and DHL for important things, rather than rely on a rapidly disintegrating and totally unreliable dying breed. It is a shame that the totally professional old school posties are being linked to the "blinkered" minority.

I live in Spain and there are many of us Brits here in our local community who are all being affected by the UK postal strikes. Many of us are still waiting for goods to be delivered from the UK. I have four children, three of whom have birthdays in September and they are still waiting for cards and gifts from family. It's so very frustrating. With the recession and the rise in unemployment I can't believe that people are behaving in such a way.

Running a small business, I rely on post more than most. However, getting letters and payment requests late, due to strikes, is unforgivable. Bring on the breakup of Royal Mail. Send it private and we have a reliable service...
