Queen Mother: Your birthday tributes

The Queen Mother is celebrating her 100th birthday, the Royal Family's first centenarian.

Often known as "the nation's favourite grandmother" she is probably the most popular member of the Royal Family. Yet despite her appeal she has always remained regal and enigmatic, refusing to give interviews or comments to the press.

She seems unchangeable in both appearance and outlook - personifying the resolve and decorum often associated with an earlier age.

Click here to read a selection of alternative views we have received about the Queen Mother.

Your tributes

I think it is wonderful that she is 100 years old. She is an amazing lady. I have always admired her very much.
Dylan Paterson, USA

You are the link for me for so much world history and personal history

Marilyn P. Goldberg, USA
Felicitations on your 100 years! You are the link for me for so much world history and personal history. My great-grandfather and great-grandmother as well as my grandfather lived in England when Victoria was Queen. I want to thank you and your family for being there for us during WWII. You were very courageous which helped us to be unafraid. I will never forget the voices of the young Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret rose on the radio with such warmth! It did us American children a world of good! I wish you all the best!
Marilyn P. Goldberg, USA

I would like to extend my heartiest greetings to your Majesty for your birthday just passed. I watched the BBC highlights on TV and was most impressed with poise and natural display of your cheer and happiness on such an occasion. Thank you for providing such a wonderful display of pomp and circumstance that only the Royal Guards could provide.
Miss Jennifer Kelly, Australia

Leave her where she is: somewhat on a pedestal

Barbara Davies, France
Many congratulations to the Queen Mother, and thanks for the several hours of sheer joy and pleasure afforded by the various celebrations. Much is said about her being 'enigmatic'. No doubt there are many who would like to 'find out all' and 'tell all' about her. They would be profoundly mistaken to do so: she represents something which transcends time and social status, something the politicians of this world can only aspire to; something we as human beings need to raise us above the everyday. Leave her where she is: somewhat on a pedestal, yes, but that is where we need her.
Barbara Davies, France

Her Majesty is a perfect example of the value of constitutional monarchy. Instead of a more or less anonymous president who is around for four years or so, Britain has the advantage of a family who can be the focus of nationalism. The Queen Mother has fulfilled her role perfectly. She must be very proud of what she has achieved. It must have taken a lot of hard work and a lot of guts!
Geoff, Netherlands

We are a family of British origin living in the George Cross Island of Malta. We think you are the greatest grandmother, not only of the UK but of the entire Commonwealth of nations. Happy birthday, Ma'am
Sarah Jane Brinkworth, Malta

Congratulations on your 100th birthday, Ma'am. May you have many more - and enjoy them all. It is nice to see that the good ones don't always die young.

I would like to say that this is certainly a wonderful thing to have reached such a prodigious age. And I wish you many more years to come. Being a ex-patriot from the land down under, I have always admired the Royal Family. I know that this is a little belated, but nonetheless given with much sincerity. I hope it was a beautiful day. Much joy and God Bless you Queen Mother.
Bronwyn Robinson, USA

My father always wanted to receive a telegram from the Queen on his 100th birthday - unfortunately he didn't make it! I know he would have liked to send loyal greetings to you, so I do so on his behalf.

She beautifully embodies one the West's greatest institutions

Ferdinand Calvo, USA
As an Italo-Austrian-American who has absolutely nothing to do with Britain or its royal family, I salute the wonderful Queen Mother on this historic birthday. She beautifully embodies one the West's greatest institutions. Hurray!
Ferdinand Calvo, USA

Some people I know told me I should write you something about the fact that I was born on the exact same day as you, the difference being that I was born in 1957... I wish to live as long as you did and wish you to continue to live in as a good condition as you seem to be now! As a member of Monarchy (only by my name though...) I share this very special moment with you!
Réjean, Québec, Canada

No greater tribute has ever been paid than Hitler's comment that the Queen Mum was "the most dangerous woman in Europe" because of her success in sustaining public morale when Britain stood alone against the Nazis. All of us who benefit from the triumph of democracy in 1945 owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude. Happy Birthday Ma'am!

Happy Birthday your Majesty! My Mum who is 87, has told me so many times just how wonderful it was to see you and King George as you passed by our house on your 1939 visit to Canada. Your visit to St. Catharines may have been brief, but it left a lifetime of memories.

It's really a great thing to have scored a century. Happy birthday Queen Mother. May you live for many more birthdays.

Many happy returns dear Ma'am on this very special birthday. I was outside Clarence House for five of your birthdays in the 1990's and always said I would be in the crowd for your 100th. Sadly I can't be in the crowd this year because I am recovering from an accident. So from Canada I thank you for all you have done for us in the Commonwealth and I wish you much happiness and good health. Have a wonderful day.
Virginia Ellis, Canada

Happy Birthday to Her Majesty the Queen Mother! The most wonderful grandmother we can wish for all families in the world. God save the Queen Mother!

Your Majesty, I would like to send you sincere good wishes on the occasion of your 100th birthday. I will never forget the day I saw you at Centenary Park, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (then Southern Rhodesia) more than 40 years ago. I was in such awe I hid behind my mother's flared skirt when you and the then young Princesses passed by. Now a grandmother myself aged 52, I am still in awe of you. Your lesson to me has always been to try and remain "cool, calm and collected".
Lyndsay Seiler, South Africa

One of the thrills of my life was being in London in 1985 for Trooping the Colour. I was standing along Pall Mall and a black limousine drove by headed for Buckingham Palace. Not bad for the baby girl who sat on Queen Victoria's knee

John W, Holland
Whatever people think about Royalty no one can deny that the role the Queen Mother has performed on behalf of the British people is staggering. I for one have nothing but admiration for one who has witnessed and experienced so many historic events over the last one hundred years. She has been a rock of stability while the world had changed beyond recognition. Not bad for the baby girl who sat on Queen Victoria's knee.
John W, Holland

A true symbol of the International family

Yatin Pathak, UK/Canada
A true symbol of the International family and the one true citizen of the Commonwealth and an inspiration to all 1.5 billion of us. We thank you for maintaining this deep historical link, when the government of the day bends over backwards to bow to the wishes of the European Union and neglect the community where the UK truly belongs. I hope Blair's government recognises this and preserves this link as a lasting memory to the greatest member of the royal family in 1000 years of history.
Yatin Pathak, UK/Canada

Serbian people will never forget days of the First and Second World War when our grandfathers fought with England and you. I wish that you live another 100 years. As bombs were falling on Belgrade last year, just like they were falling on London and Belgrade in April 1941, you were an inspiration then, just like you are today. Happy birthday!!!
Anna, Serbia

The Queen Mother has always been special to me. My mother is originally from England; and her relations are still there. Her mother was born just a few days before the Queen Mum. She would always tell me stories about her. She felt a special closeness to her because of their shared age. I have always loved England; and the Queen Mother IS England at its best. She is truly a most remarkable woman.

Her Majesty, the Queen Mother has always been a pillar of strength and determination

Irene Dillon, Malta
Her Majesty, the Queen Mother has always been a pillar of strength and determination. The Royal Family has indeed suffered disappointments and severe criticism, yet I am sure that this fire of inner strength which has always guided the Queen Mother, has reflected throughout these moments of great trial. She is indeed a wonderful example of strength, fortitude and peace. May God bless her and protect her.

I will always remember the day in the 50's when my mother, walking to the post office, saw an official car slow down and the window roll down. The Queen Mother was on her way to the Cheltenham Races and took time to wave to the only person in the street, my mum. What a true lady. My mum never forgot that day. Thanks Ma'am for giving her that special greeting. I wish my mum was still around to help you celebrate.
