A year-long programme of events has been set out to mark the 90th birthday of the man who led South Africa out of apartheid.
These include a global "birthday wishes" campaign, a concert in London's Hyde Park in June and the launch of an annual "Promise of Leadership Dialogue" involving leaders from African nations.
Nelson Mandela remains one of the world's most revered statesman. Since stepping down as president in 1999, he has become South Africa's highest-profile ambassador, campaigning on HIV/Aids and other causes.
