I was not aware that the UN had declared 21 September a day for International Peace.

I asked a number of friends and colleagues whether they had heard about it, and they hadn't either.
Notwithstanding, peace is our most pressing need and burning ambition here in Iraq.
What would happen to my country if peace broke out on 21 September and all forms of occupation, war and violence came to an end?
What would we do then?

Our airports would be flooded by Iraqis returning home from different parts of the world.
Our international borders would witness a sudden flurry of activity as thousands of Iraqis came back. Engineers, physicians, academics, technicians, specialists, artists, writers and all those who were forced to leave Iraq because of the war, could finally return.
Security
It would be the first time in a relatively long period that children and young people would be able to leave their homes to go to school or university, without arousing the fears of their parents from a stray or targeted bullet.
We would be able to walk freely - restaurants and cafes would have customers.
Young girls would be allowed to accompany their parents on shopping trips. Families have tended to prevent them from going with them for fear that they may be abducted or attacked.
We would be able to visit relatives and friends again. We are forced to stay at home because of the deteriorating security situation.
Finally, everybody would be able to go back to work.
Markets would be opened so business would prosper and people would be able to earn their living smoothly.
The number of unemployed Iraqis would be reduced, so there would be fewer empty stomachs.
Doctors would be able to reopen their clinics to treat patients.
You may say I am a dreamer - but I have the right to dream.
