For those of you who can not reach your friends or relatives I can try for you. The international lines are very busy and you may just be experiencing problems due to an overload on the international lines. If the person you are seeking is English speaking, and they have a phone number, then e-mail their details to me and I will do what I can to ease your concern. I'm not sure how the phone lines are nearer the epicentre, but I will try. Around Taipei and the East of the island I believe the lines are OK. Most of Taipei is relatively unscathed. A lot of people here and elsewhere on the Web are trying to locate the ones they know. I'm a little worried about my best friend in Taipei since the last time I heard from her was Tuesday(Wednesday in Taiwan). Electricity is still out. I don't know about water and gas. Most buildings are ok in the city.

I understand Taiwan experiences a few quakes every year and the people are calm in such situation. But can anyone, who has access to the Internet, in every major city of the island, be kind enough to report what's going on? It'd be greatly appreciated and and a big relief for all of us. Thanks very much to those who already told us what happened. Email: joehcheung@rocketmail.com

I have managed to reach relatives throughout Taiwan. The metropolitan Taipei area is fine, with minor structural damage, the city of Taichung is fine, the fatalities reported in the "Taichung" area is referring to the greater Taichung area, Chiayi is fine, and all the cities south of Chiayi are fine, Most of the cities suffered structural damage, the situation in the metropolitan area of Taichung right now is: Electricity comes on and off. Water: there is no water, but it is expected to arrive within a few days. Gas: there is no gas except for gas tanks. Phone: the phones are FINALLY working. The main problem with the phone lines right now are the EXTREME number of people trying to call into Taiwan therefore all the international circuits are used. I tried for hours, but I finally reached my relatives, so it is possible. Have faith everyone, if there are further inquiries, please feel free to email me
Vicky L, USA

Although many World News services responded to the Quake as an island wide disaster, here in Kaosiung there was little to no damage. National as well as international phone services were interrupted but power was never lost. I was on a fourth floor during the quake and aside from a little shaking no problems. People in the taller buildings experienced the shake more but I know of one group who took and elevator down from the 22nd with no troubles. Kaosiung Harbor is fine and being the 4th largest container port in the World, I would not worry to much about the export economy suffering.
