Mr Jennings is one of the reasons why I chose to become a journalist
Jonathan Melhuish, Edinburgh
Mr Jennings is one of the reasons why I chose to become a journalist and he is one of the few US-based journalists I admire and want to be like, I will miss you presenting the only decent news on the US networks including CNN.
Jonathan Melhuish, Edinburgh

I remember Peter Jennings in the early 196's, hosting a teen dance programme called Saturday Date. It originated in Ottawa from CJOH. Canada has lost a very influential personality.
Karen, Waterford, Canada

I have access to many different outlets for my news coverage, however, when an important story broke, it was Peter Jennings that I turned to. I respected his experience and I knew he would do the best job of giving me the information I needed. He wasn't just a newsreader; he was a brilliant journalist with a vast knowledge of world affairs and something that is missing from most news people today, integrity. I will miss the man I invited into my home everyday.
Christine Schmidt, Balltimore, Maryland

I will really, really miss Peter Jennings. He enjoyed showing us the honest to goodness news without the jingoism and bias we have to endure with other networks. Such jingoism makes me less inclined to watch the news these days. Goodbye Peter, thanks for everything.
Sarah Dolphin, Sydney, Australia

Listening to Peter Jennings in the evening was always a special way to unwind my day. I enjoyed his delivery and style, particularly the way he would tilt his head to one side as he spoke. He was a class act. He will be sadly missed.
May, Redondo beach, California, USA

Peter Jennings's insatiable desire to understand the events of the world, coupled with his unmatched talent for informing millions of people of these events, guarantees his standing as one of our greatest broadcast journalists. To all of us who watched and listened, he bestowed a priceless gift - knowledge. Peter, from all of us, thank you, and good night.
Alex, Tokyo, Japan

Peter Jennings epitomised style and composure
Einez Crespo, Manila, Philippines
Peter Jennings epitomised style and composure. When I lived in the US he was always the one I looked forward to when watching the news. He also had guts. If anyone can rattle the cage of former President Clinton, he was the man to do it and still look cool. He will be sorely missed.
Einez Crespo, Manila, Philippines

I started watching ABC World News Tonight in 1981.I was a new immigrant from Guyana. Thanks to Peter Jennings I was fortunate to see events in the poorer parts of the world. He will be missed very much.
Norman Williams, Mississauga, Canada

Peter Jennings was a class act and brought us the news as such. A man of dignity, with compassion and deep respect for all people. As a Canadian, I am so proud of our fellow Canuck. I pray that his family will be comforted by love and friendship. God bless them and give them the strength they need during this most trying time. A fond farewell to you Peter. You were loved by many and will be missed by all.
Peggy O'Brien, Amherst, Canada

The world has lost a true gift. Peter Jennings was the most ethical, fair and balanced journalist, with a sense of true humanity, intelligent and kind, expressed in all of his work and encounters. Peace and blessings to Peter and his family.
Tarek, San Francisco, CA, USA

Peter Jennings was really the last of the real journalist nightly news anchors. I don't think we'll ever again in the US see the era of sitting down to watch the national news every night reported by a person we trust. Godspeed Mr Jennings, and thank you.
Krista Grothoff, Los Angeles, CA, USA

I watched Peter read the news every day and very much enjoyed listening to him. He was relaxed and affable and obviously highly intelligent. It's very sad that he's passed away - I hope his family will cherish the fact that he will be sorely missed by the public, as well as by his loved ones. Rest in peace Peter.
Caroline, Hong Kong

He will be missed greatly by those who prefer their news without bias
Terence Allen, Atlanta, GA, United States
Pete Jennings was poised, confident, and polished, and you always felt like he knew what he was talking about, even thought he was merely presenting the news, and not making it himself. He will be missed greatly by those who prefer their news without bias or rancour. God speed, indeed, Peter.
Terence Allen, Atlanta, GA, United States

When I first came to the US from Portugal in 1966 I watched Peter Jennings give his reports from all over the world. He seemed to be the only one from the major networks that had a feel for international news. I will miss him and my thoughts are with his family.
Joao, Sacramento, USA

I first saw him on TV by chance and his presence was inexplicably powerful and attractive; I ended up watching him all night! He was divinely gifted for the job and that is why finding substitutes may prove very hard.
Hemantha, London, UK

Ever since I came to the US in 1990, Peter has been the voice for international news for me. It is so sad to see such a great journalist passing away too soon.
Jun Shen, Farmington, CT, USA

I cannot imagine a global event not being covered by Peter Jennings
Vicki, Orlando, Florida USA
I cannot imagine a global event not being covered by Peter Jennings. He was always the consummate professional, relating the events clearly and with compassion and calm, no matter what the event was. His on-air presence was captivating. The world has lost a great journalist. No one will ever take his place.
Vicki, Orlando, Florida USA

Peter Jennings was an institution. I grew up watching World News Tonight. This was a man of integrity. We'll miss him.
Gustavo, USA

ABC's World News Tonight is the only American newscast I watch, and I watched it because of Mr Jennings. A class act, he will be missed dearly.
Yusuf, Toronto, Canada

The success of ABC news owes everything to the genius of Peter Jennings. He was the greatest and will be missed.
Neil Lithgo, Walthamstow, London

A Canadian export we were always proud of, who never forgot where he came from!
Debora Alleyne, Toronto, Canada

He was a great journalist and the cameras loved him
Lita, Nuku'alofa, Tonga
I grew up watching this guy. He was a great journalist and the cameras loved him. I'm now a journalist and he'll always be an inspiration for me to push forward in my career.
Lita, Nuku'alofa, Tonga

American TV has lost one of the last reporters/journalists with integrity. Thank you for giving me the best evening news program while I lived in the USA.
Soren, Bali, Indonesia

I have watched World News Tonight for about a year and I wondered where Peter had been for the last few months, as I had not known about his illness. World News Tonight is screened at the time when I'm returning home from a night out and it was interesting to hear late night news from a US perspective. His presenting style was great - the fact that I watched an American news programme is unusual as I have the same view as a previous contributor that American news seems sensationalist. The show won't be the same without him.
Andy, Scotland

Given the choice, it was always World News Tonight before CBC or the BBC. The only reason for this was Peter Jennings. As a viewer, you instantly got that he understood what he was talking about, you saw the ever so slightly raised eyebrow, the subtle change in tone. I am surprised by how affected I am by the death of someone I didn't personally know. Very sad, a great and a good man, taken too soon. RIP Peter.
Joanne Kelly, Gabriola Island, Canada

Peter Jennings destroyed the myth that US news was "dumbed down"
GJC, London, England
Peter Jennings destroyed the myth that US news was "dumbed down". His reports were as fair, complex, clear, articulate and balanced as any in the world.
GJC, London, England

While it may seem a bit silly to think of anyone over the erstwhile retirement age of 65 as dying too young, let it be said: We've lost two giants on either side of the pond much too soon. Both Peter Jennings and John Peel died too young. And we are the poorer for both of their untimely passings.
Greg, Sunland, CA, USA

A big fan, I regularly watched Peter Jennings both when over on holidays in the US and via the 1.30am broadcast of World News Tonight on BBC News 24. He was a great journalist who told the news with such clarity and integrity. You'll be missed!
Tracy Barber, Surrey, UK

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Peter. He kept me informed about the world. My prayers are with his family.
Rev Pamela M Powell, Paterson, New Jersey, USA

To me, Mr Jennings always seemed exceptional. The way he reported the news was unique. On American TV you rarely see international news. And if you did, it was Peter Jennings' World News Tonight. America has lost a great reporter and person.
John Druege, Duisburg, Germany

He had a distinctive and admirable flair
Martin Medikonduri, San Diego, CA
It is such a shock that Peter died, I really hoped that he would win the battle against cancer - he was one of the excellent anchors and he had a distinctive and admirable flair which I will remember for the rest of my days. May God rest his soul. I will most certainly miss him.
Martin Medikonduri, San Diego, CA

I will never forget his face and his calm and serene voice. May Allah take him straight to heaven. And I will pray for him.
Nauman, Frenso, CA

Peter Jennings always cared about the real people behind the news, and wasn't afraid to show his emotion. Much thanks to his family for sharing him with us for so many wonderful years.
Quinn Ankrum, Grand Island, NY, USA

Peter Jennings filled the void in network news coverage left by the retirement of Walter Cronkite. As a child growing up in the 1980s I remember his coverage of all of the big events (Berlin Wall, Collapse of the USSR, 9/11). His coverage was always balanced and fair but with a very human touch. Network news will never be the same without him.
Anthony, Houston, TX USA

Peter Jennings reported the News with an honesty and clarity and you knew that you had just heard the truth good or bad. He was a gentleman of this country and I respected him tremendously.
Donna McCluskey, Manchester, TN, USA

Compared to the drab and biased reporting of his counterparts, Mr Jennings was a refreshing and trusted source of information. It was obvious that he was a perfectionist, but one with a boyish touch of mischief, and certainly not mean-spirited. He referred to himself not as an objective voice, but rather one that provided a "fair" coverage and analysis of the news. He was a welcome guest in our home for as long as I can remember and the world has suffered a great loss. The evening news will go on, but his shoes will be most difficult to fill. God bless you and your family, Peter. Thank you for not merely reporting the news, but for also revealing the human condition in every story.
Randy Wade, Grants Pass, Oregon, USA

Blessings and honour and peace profound. I enjoyed listening/watching him during his newscast. May his soul rest in peace.
Carole Williams, Kingston, Jamaica

He always asked the tough questions. He never backed off of a story. He strove to give us as much information as possible about the world's stories. He had strength and courage to bring us the truth. He will be missed like no other.
Gay Talley, USA

Peter Jennings was always the calm amidst the storms in our everyday lives
Melba I Garza, Mission, Texas
This is truly the "end of an era". Peter Jennings was always the calm amidst the storms in our everyday lives. His eloquent broadcasts reached us all. We laughed with him and we cried with him. He held us all together in times of great sorrow and rejoiced with us at joyful times. His honesty and ability to deliver news to the American public was extraordinary. I will miss him. Prayers go out to his wife and children as well as all his ABC family.
Melba I Garza, Mission, Texas

I grew up watching Peter Jennings on my father's favourite show - World News Tonight. I have heard news of every major event that has happened in my lifetime from him. He was candid, eloquent, and intelligent. He is irreplaceable.
Neetu , Los Angeles, USA

A journalist's view of the world that I trusted. He was never shrill, he never came across as a handsome twit. I loved it when he would dead pan repeat a quote but you saw the laughing eyes. I have missed him, will remember and respect him. God's speed Peter Jennings.
M Y Hizon, Clarence, NY

I have been saying, "Goodnight, Peter darling" for over 20 years. My grandchildren have always teased me about that and they will tell you I never watch any other news. I'm so very sad for Peter's family. I think he was a wonderful, compassionate, and caring human being. He had a way of making you know life and the world around really mattered to him and he wanted to share everything he could with the rest of us in this world. I pray God will give comfort to his family and friends at this very sad time in their lives. Peter, I'm going to miss you. "Goodnight, Peter darling".
May, Wyoming, MI, USA

I watched ABC News because of Peter Jennings and his inimitable presentation of the topic at hand. He was typical of the kind of journalist that Canada produces; a calm professional with broad knowledge, style, clarity and humour. We will not see his like again. A son of Canada of whom Canadians can be very proud.
Stephen Davis, Toronto, Canada.

About 10 years ago when I was just starting out at a book publisher in Toronto I was manning the phones covering the receptionist's lunch when a call came through for one of our senior editors. At that time we didn't have voicemail so I wrote his message down - he said "It's Peter Jennings calling". I was totally star-struck and flabbergasted. So as soon as the editor came back from lunch I bombarded her with questions. It turned out he had been her first boyfriend in Ottawa when she was 18. I asked her why they didn't get married and she replied somewhat wistfully that "Oh I would have just been his first wife". But they were friends for the rest of his life - that says something!
Fiona Lamb, St Catharines, Canada

I lost my brother two years ago at 46 years of age to the same disease
Kathleen A Linde, Hillsdale, NJ
I am completely broken-hearted at the loss of our beloved Peter Jennings. We (the viewing public) will miss him terribly. I lost my brother two years ago at 46 years of age to the same disease. Hopefully, as sad as this day is, his death may make others realize that cigarettes do kill. My condolences to his family and colleagues. He is truly an angel now.
Kathleen A Linde, Hillsdale, NJ

I was, at first, surprised by the tears that overwhelmed me when I heard of his death. I remember watching him as a little girl reporting from London. There will never be another journalist like him.
Amy, Valley Village, CA

He was a member of our home. We have missed him the past few months and now we know it is final. Thank you for being with us as a family each night. There will always be a void, but yet a feeling that you are still there. May God be with you and your family. We suffer the loss with you.
Wayne Cooper, Cherry Hill, New Jersey

More than anyone else in network television in the USA, he valued international news and serious news of all forms over trivial and celebrity "news."
Joshua Dressler, Columbus, Ohio, USA

Peter Jennings was a name I often heard on ABC. Even if it was just a commercial saying "World News Tonight" it would never end without saying "With Peter Jennings". He was in coverage since the Vietnam War to September 11 2001, informing and comforting a lot of the American people during these dreadful events. People will most definitely miss his calm, collective style and voice from behind the anchor desk. Peter Jennings one of the few super anchors will be missed.
Frank, New York City, USA

When asked "who is the one person you would like to meet", his name was always at the top of my list. He would have been a fascinating person to visit with for even a few minutes. He was the reason I watched ABC evening news - worldly, but humble.
L Worth, Overland Park, KS

Sadly missed! We watched ABC news secondly to Canadian news because of Peter Jennings!
Elizabeth Brown, Toronto, Canada

He was a voice of calm and comfort during the September 11th attacks
Sarah, Seattle, USA
He was a voice of calm and comfort during the September 11th attacks. His reassuring voice helped an entire nation to cope with the tragedy. He will be greatly missed.
Sarah, Seattle, USA

This dignified intelligent man has been a 6.30pm fixture in our house for as long as I can remember. To this day we don't call the broadcast World News Tonight, we call it the Peter Jennings news. His calm and respectful presence will be sorely missed.
Katy, Wellington, Ohio, USA

I remember Peter Jennings from when I was a little girl. He always spoke so eloquently, and will be greatly missed! Much love and prayers to his family.
Monica Carbajosa, New York, USA

One of the reasons I even dared to watch the news was because of Peter Jennings. He had such a presence that many of us took him as a role model.
Chamara Rabel, Kensington, MD, USA

With his death truly ends the closing of the 'super anchor' era that he epitomised, along with Dan Rather and Tom Brokaw.
Garrett L Garfield, McAllen, Texas, USA

I will miss his honesty, compassion and the love he had for the news and delivering it in an understandable way
Terri Hampton, Hammond, Indiana, USA
I will miss his honesty, compassion and the love he had for the news and delivering it in an understandable way. His persona will be missed. May God bless and guide his family. I will miss him more than I can say.
Terri Hampton, Hammond, Indiana, USA

Peter was an icon. He was part of the day. He was a professional. My thoughts go to him and his family. He will be missed by me and many others. God Bless Peter.
Gordon Moss, Las Vegas, NV, USA

The last of the best. What a terrible void will be left for us now. With news becoming entertainment, Mr Jennings was a bastion of civility, integrity and grace.
Katherine Ingram-Flaherty, Jacksonville, OR, USA

Thanks to Mr Jennings my lifelong addiction to world news remains intact. I became hooked on his nightly program as a teenager, wishing to be as seemingly well informed as he always appeared. He was a James Bond of the nightly news.
Dale Ellison, Jackson, Mississippi, USA

I will never forget the way Peter Jennings addressed our nation in times of sorrow and of joy, living his life with true devotion to his passion.
Michelle Leigh, Santiago, Chile

He held my world together when it was literally crashing down around me
Greg, NYC, USA
Living in NYC during 9/11, I turned to Peter Jennings' coverage of events. There was something about his presence, his intellect, his voice, that helped me through those dark days. He held my world together when it was literally crashing down around me.
Greg, NYC, USA

I just expected him to be back anchoring. He had that cut above in reporting that so many now don't have. I will miss the quality he brought to reporting.
S Crowell, USA

Peter Jennings was the very best news anchor. I have been addicted to watching him every evening in my living room. He has certainly shaped my world views and personal interest towards international affairs. May God bless him.
Christopher Xaphakdy, Minnesota, USA

I am deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Peter Jennings. I can hear his voice right now as if he was doing the news. That wonderful charismatic man who we have come to know in our homes and in our hearts. Certainly he was one of the great ones.
Jason Castle, Kissimmee, Florida, USA

He leaves an enormous void in the field of news reporting in this country
Alexander Bridge, Bath, Maine, USA
Peter Jennings leaves an enormous void in the field of news reporting in this country. His deeply informed knowledge of world events gave viewers a unique sense of the news and its effect on their lives. As a fellow Canadian, and former CBC radio journalist, sometimes our paths would cross. His spirit will be missed by us all.
Alexander Bridge, Bath, Maine, USA

I first watched Peter Jennings on ABC News while living in New Zealand in 1991. He appeared as an oasis of calm quality in a desert of loud mediocrity. Since those days I recently caught him while BBC News 24 linked with ABC News. And there was Peter again. A little older, but the same unmistakable delivery of calm authority. Budding TV anchors could watch and learn.
Andrew Paglia, UK

So long friend. I'll be thinking about you as I muddle through life. God knows he took you from us too soon.
Joni L Hunter, Bethesda, MD, USA

Peter was like our Paxman on BBC TV - always looking for the truth and not giving in until he found it. He will be missed with a sad heart.
Houston J, Bexleyheath, UK

As a journalist myself, he is one of my professional heroes. If I can be just a tenth of what he was as a reporter and presenter, then I'll be happy with my lot.
Kamahl Santamaria, London, UK

How sad. Whenever I managed to watch ABC's World News Tonight I was always impressed with his charismatic presence. One immediately trusted him, akin to Walter Cronkite in many ways. He will, I am sure, be sadly missed on US screens. A pity we in the UK never got to see more of him and gain a better appreciation of his journalistic integrity.
Martyn, Wakefield, West Yorks, UK

It is unlikely we will have such a fine journalist again
Lawrence Wood, West Point, Virginia, USA
Extremely sad news to hear of Peter Jennings' death. I will always remember him as a journalist with credibility, warmth, insight, and sheer smoothness. As an educator, I remember him mentoring young newscasters on the Channel One program broadcast in high schools. Very sad to hear that he lost his battle with the wicked disease of cancer. Condolences to the ABC news staff. God rest his soul and bless his family. It is unlikely we will have such a fine journalist again.
Lawrence Wood, West Point, Virginia, USA

I worked with Peter several times during my career at ABC affiliates and found him always to be genuine and helpful. I was always amazed at his ability to ad-lib using the wealth of information he always had to hand. He will be missed. He will be treasured.
Louis De La Foret, Milton Keynes, UK

Given the tabloid nature of American network news, Peter Jennings embodied the gravitas and credibility to which other news shows aspired. It is sad that in the current climate in TV news where sensationalism is eroding real news values, the likes of Peter Jennings are unlikely to be replaced.
Tim, Glasgow, UK

He was the best journalist/anchorman of the big three (ABC, NBC,CBS) networks. Jennings was really the only big name news man who pushed hard for international news. His passing is our loss here in America. He was a class act and he will be missed.
Dan Braverman, Minnesota, USA

What a terrible loss. Mr Jennings always brought a much needed quality to broadcasting the news: dignity.
Charles Foley, Evansville, Indiana, USA

Among US newsreaders Peter Jennings was by far the most important voice since Walter Cronkite
Michael Fiorella, Tokyo, Japan
I'm an American who has lived in Japan for 18 years. Besides the BBC, I rely on internet broadcasts from ABC News to keep informed. Today is a truly sad day for intelligent American news viewers. Among US newsreaders Peter Jennings was by far the most important voice since Walter Cronkite. He was well informed, articulate, sophisticated and quick on his feet. Moreover, he brought a truly international perspective to US news reports which is so often lacking in other American newsreaders. I thought about him daily as others presented the news while he was undergoing cancer treatment. It was a tremendous shock to learn of his death. I will miss him dearly.
Michael Fiorella, Tokyo, Japan

Jennings was the best of this generation. I am too young to really remember watching Walter Cronkite. But I have seen all the other network news anchors since. Without a doubt, Jennings was simply the best. He will be missed.
Steve S, Hershey, PA, USA

I felt I could usually count on Peter Jennings to give a balanced report of national and international events on the evening news. He was an even-handed journalist and US network television news anchor. He impressed me with his clarity and composure, and he always seemed sincere. I admired his decision late in life to become a US citizen.
RS, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

I arrived in America in 1990 to study in Boston and I was immediately struck by Mr Jennings' top notch professionalism, acumen, and powerful news anchoring abilities. He was adamant in his questions, undaunted in his resolve, precise and to the point in his search for the truth. He had a likeable personality, he was shrewd, and intelligently brilliant. I know that America and the whole world will miss him as I do. May God rest his soul in eternal peace and may his memory be eternal.
Elekiah Andago Kihali, Kenyan in Thessaloniki, Greece

I remember Mr Jennings as a very photogenic presence on the TV screen
Jodi, Brussels, Belgium
I remember Mr Jennings as a very photogenic presence on the TV screen. He was always polite but probing, never abrasive.
Jodi, Brussels, Belgium

One of the few remaining journalists who still had credibility, trust and respect from everyday people watching the news. These are rare character virtues shared by so few in today's world. Such deep sadness affects my soul to hear of Peter's death. May God be with his family and friends during these trying days.
RM Cedillo, San Francisco, CA, USA

There was a time World News Tonight broadcasted in the morning time in Taiwan, and I saw Mr Jennings reading the news on TV. He became the man I looked up to in my life. This morning I got the sad news in the media office I work for and really regret it.
Tony K, Li, Taipei, Taiwan

I remember growing up watching Peter Jennings. He was my favourite news anchor of the big three networks in America. He spoke very calmly and with good diction. When I found out that two of the three anchors were resigning, I was happy that Jennings was staying on. I was shocked soon after when I learned that Peter had acquired lung cancer.
Paul de Saint-Rat, Oxford, OH, USA
