What do you think about the Sky Vault?
Sky Vault
Sky Vault may span the M1

The futuristic Sky Vault is to become the East Midlands' landmark of the future.

The team from 2hD, a group of designers and engineers from Nottingham, created the Sky Vault and are working on the design with engineers Buro Happold and MACE project managers, who sorted out the London Eye, to build the structure.

Despite comparisons to a giant lobster pot, it beat nearly 200 entries in a public vote.

So is the East Midlands eagerly awaiting the Sky Vault? Do you think the design is fantastic or a flop? Tell us what you think.

The following comments reflect the balance of views we have received:

This is cynical and superficial. It benefits no-one, and presents a hazard to many. Spend the money where it is desperately needed. Especially if taxpayers are footing the bill.
Chris, UK

I think the Sky Vault is an amazing piece of art, but not for the motorway! It would be distracting to drivers, and could cause no end of accidents!
Kharmen, England

What is the Sky Vault for? just to make a part of the country pretty why not put the money into something useful like schools, the forces etc...
Claire, Leeds

Kharmen, they had to make the bridges on the M6 more interesting to stop drivers from falling asleep like they did on the M1. Chris, it should be good for tourism. Claire, I don't think we should put any more money into the forces, pretty things are nicer. It's great and you're all miserable.
Malcolm, UK/Belgium

Drivers will be rubber-necking causing tailbacks when it's busy or worse, especially if the weather's bad, causing an increase in the number of accidents.
Richard , UK

What a waste of money. How about spending the money improving the currently disastrous rail network which will bring investment and real growth to the region? Some people really need their brains checked.
David, Nottingham

What a waste of Effort, Money and Time. It, together with the angel of the north remind me of the Stalinist statue/monstrosities in Russia. The money would have been better spent on the natural environment surrounding this road. How much will it cost to maintain? and who will be paying?
Derek H, England

Very nice...now what about my pension fund?
Clem, UK

Looks fantastic. Doubtless the naysayers would rather see the money lost on the NHS, but this work of art will do far more for the wellbeing of all who witness it.
Stefan, England

I reckon the night sky is more impressive than any art work can be. I'm not against the idea but does it have to be lit?
Dave, UK

That thing is definitely a waste of cash, I admit its nice but how about making part of the motorway a few lanes wider and having a more efficient road system. Like I said the piece of art is a nice thought but this isn't the year 3000 where we need useless pretty pieces of futuristic art, lets keep it simple, put it into something we need! We don't need a net with lights on it, I get that when I put my crimbo lights up.
Leigh Smith, Nottingham now Florida USA

Reminds me of a great big fly catcher.
Wayne Sleep, Scotland

The Angel of the North has become a key symbol of the North East of England. This looks fantastic and will help to draw the East Midlands together.
David Brede, UK

... we have just blown Iraq into the middle of the last century, now they want to waste money, resources etc on something that is totally useless as well as being an eyesore. Why ?
Alan J, UK

Maintenance of such a structure will cause yet another reason for lane closures. Traffic flow is already substantially disrupted on the motorway networks due to essential road and bridge maintenance. There's a place for everything and the motorway is not a place for art.
Angela, UK

It benefits no-one, and presents a hazard to many. Spend the money where it is desperately needed. Especially if taxpayers are footing the bill. put the money into something useful like schools, the forces etc... Stop these rubbish wasters of our taxes
Gray, England

It costs how much - and will do what?
Rick, US

Does the Angel of the North cause motorists to crash? I'd love to see more investment in hospitals, in education, the railways, fighting homelessness, cancer aids... the list goes on. But if that was all we spent our money on, would the dull grey cheap-concrete world we'd be left with, really be worth living in?
JV, Great Britain

"Cynical", "waste of money", "Dangerous". In that case so were the Colossus, The Eiffel Tower. Nelsons Column etc. It takes people with vision and purpose to create a thing of beauty. I can't wait.
John, Nottingham

Go for it!, the world is grey enough, we need things like this to brighten life up.
J L Raithby, lincolnshire, U K, Europe.

The natural East Midlands is in itself beautiful and in places breathtaking. Let us preserve what nature has given us rather than wasting money.Sure a great work of art but un-necessary and inappropriate. Have seen Angel of the North many times. Rust and the weather have reduced it to a neglected eyesore, no doubt the same would happen to the Sky Vault.
Dave Hardwick, England

I think that the design is fantasic just like the london eye which is a truly magnificent development.
shiba, UK

I will come to see it, tourism certainly will increase. We need more art in this world and making the highway more interesting is a great idea, better than the billboard advertisements we have here!
Jen Brown, Upstate NY, US

I'm not against making journeys up the M1 more interesting. But I am definitely against closing the M1 so that this structure can be lifted into place. It is also likely to slow traffic down, and therefore cause more delays.
Dan, UK
