Talking Point

Caretaker Keegan: Can it work?

So the waiting is over and England have a new manager - well, for a few months anyway.

After lengthy negotiations, the FA has come up with a solution that is surprising even by its own standards.

Keegan will take charge of England part-time, but only for four matches before returning full-time to division two Fulham.

Smart move, or hopelessly offside?

England face a series of crunch games in the bid to qualify for the European Championships in 2000.

Keegan is a master motivator, a fine player turned astute coach. Just the person, perhaps, to stir the team ahead of such important matches.

But will the players really want a manager whose devotion to duty only stretches to a day a week?

And what are they to make of yet another search for a manager, when they have had Glenn Hoddle, Howard Wilkinson and Keegan in a matter of weeks?

Even if canny Keegan changes his mind and ends up signing on the dotted line, is this the best way to prepare for the Euro 2000 clashes?

What do you think?
