Should Germany stop atoning for the war?

Talking Point joins with BBC World Service Radio's Europewide this week to discuss whether it is time for Germany to stop apologising for World War II.

The German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder meets industrial leaders this week to finalise details of a fund to compensate slave labourers under the Nazis.

But for how long should Germany continue to pay for what the Nazis did in the war?

The respected German writer Martin Walser prompted a new bout of soul-searching late last year when he said this standpoint served only to perpetuate national guilt.

Chancellor Schroeder - the first German leader to have no personal recollection of the war - has himself spoken of looking forward, without forgetting the past.
