Talking Point

Has Clinton won?

More than 13 months after Monica Lewinsky burst onto the world stage, the US Senate has acquitted President Bill Clinton of perjury and obstruction of justice.

On the article of perjury, senators voted 45 guilty, 55 not guilty, with 10 Republicans voting for acquittal. On the charge of obstruction of justice, senators were split down the middle, voting 50 guilty, 50 not guilty. Five Republicans crossed the aisle to join their Democrat colleagues.

But while Mr Clinton will remain in office, the scandal is said to have irrefutabley damaged the presidency, the Congress and the media - not to mention Mr Clinton's personal reputation.

So is Mr Clinton victorious? Even though he has been acquitted by the Senate, was it right for him to put the country through a gruelling five-week trial?
