More of your tributes to the Queen Mother
Buckingham Palace has announced the death of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

She lived longer than any other King or Queen in British history.

Yet her reign as Consort was comparatively short.

She was one of the architects of the modern House of Windsor, yet she was born a commoner.

Her birth came at the very beginning of the 20th century, but each generation will have its own memories of her.

Send us your Queen Mother tributes.

Her presence and graciousness always reminded me of my grandmother

Her presence and graciousness always reminded me of my grandmother and great-grandmother (my "Bubbie"). I will always remember her as "Queen Bubbie" for the love and affection she showed to all of her great-grandchildren.

She was the 20th Century.

John Barrow, UK
She was the backbone and heart of the Royal family, our nation and our people. We are enriched by her life and saddened by her passing. She was the 20th Century. She is at peace and we will honour her.
John Barrow, UK

May Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother live in peace and happiness in heaven. She was a most wonderful women who was always smiling. She lived to a truly remarkable age, and as she lived through the whole of the 20th century, she saw many sad times, but she also enjoyed many, many happy times in her life. It is a great pity that she had to see her daughter Princess Margaret die, only a short time ago, but she will now be re-united with her. May her soul find peace in heaven. I hope that Queen Elizabeth and other members of the Royal family can gain some peace and hope from the way the Queen Mother enjoyed life to the full.
Heather Mac Donald, Ireland

Australia awoke this morning to the sad passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. What a sad loss of such a gracious lady who served her King and Country and Commonwealth for such a long time. She touched so many hearts around the world and will always be remembered for her leadership and qualities that made her what she was. Our heartfelt sympathies to Her Majesty The Queen, the Royal Family and Great Britain and the Commonwealth. We have lost a gracious lady. God has her in his keeping.
The Baker Family, NSW Australia

A great and powerful wave of human goodness and kind, has finally and calmly come to rest, with a host of white horses guiding her majesty's spirit onward. She will be greatly missed.
Russell Beckett, England

I was privileged as member of Friends of St. Paul's Cathedral to sit very close to Her Majesty under The Great Dome of St. Paul's over the past 3 Friends Festival Services and each time sat Gulping in nervousness and I think she noticed and thought it amusing. My earliest Photo of Her Majesty is at 1981 Royal Wedding and my latest was nice ones at Isle of Dogs last summer and after attending the Service at St. Paul's with her. Last night, ironically, I did think of her as I sent her a humorous gift once - a plastic gold crown. Clarence House sent the Crown back but still a nice letter saying she was glad I liked my trip to Britain that year. I just returned also from being there to see the Funeral and attend the Requiem for Princess Margaret. I am booking to come over for the Queen Mother's funeral.
Martin Maraquin , San Diego CA USA

For more than a century she accompanied a country and a people.

Stephan Fennel, Germany
For more than a century she accompanied a country and a people. And for most of that time she lived the virtues of love, devotion and will of mind. A truly great being, royal not just by marriage but by her everyday deeds. It is a loss to great for anyone to suffer alone - in what should have been a year of jubilation and celebration for the Royal Family. Instead it has become a year of mourning and sorrow. Our thoughts are with the Queen, her family, the British People and the Commonwealth. RIP, Queen Mother!
Stephan Fennel, editor GoBritain, Germany

The last of the greats, has just left us, and is now with her beloved husband, who she surely missed in life. Sweet dreams.
D.L.Gibbs, England

The Crown Jewel of the British Royal Family has passed away. Rest in peace.

Let her courage, good nature and kindness be an example to people all over the world. As one of the younger members of society, I will never forget her loyalty to the nation. My thoughts and prayers are with the Royal family. May she rest in peace and her example live on forever.
Jeremy Harper, Great Britain

Thousands in British Columbia join with me in expressing deep sadness over the passing of our Queen Mum. I served with the RAF during the war and will never forget how inspirational she was. Sincere condolences to the Royal Family. .
Douglas Tod, Canada

I will forever think of her wit, charm and impish smile

Ian Macdonald, Canada
Her Majesty showed us grace, compassion and courage. Having met Her Majesty and known members of her household I was honoured to be able to see some of her magic firsthand. The best tribute to Her Majesty we can make is to live our lives by her gentle, and thoughtful example. The world needs more compassion and kindness and I will forever think of her wit, charm and impish smile when I think of Her Majesty. My very deepest sympathies to Her Majesty and to His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and the Royal Family. Canada mourns the loss of our Queen Mother. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
Ian L. Macdonald, Canada

The Queen Mother represented the integrity of the royal family and was the balancing force of media and public interest in the monarchy. She has left a legacy that can be pursued by the rest of the royal family and all those who aspire to her zest for life through trial and tribulation.
Seth, England

May God bless her and the family at this time of sadness.
Steven M. Shay, USA

I would like to pass on the most sincere condolences to the Queen, her family and to everyone who is English or an anglophile. We have all lost an incredibly strong person, who through the worst of times, managed to hold herself and her family together. She will be missed, but her memory will live on for the age.
Julian Buckley, Brazil

The values she held need not be owed to royalty only.

Bryan, USA
A noble lady whose steadfast example of decorum, decency, integrity, honour and responsibility must now be called ancient traditions in this modern world. How much better would the world be if people would not just cherish these values, but live them as she did. The values she held need not be owed to royalty only.
Bryan, Maryland, USA

A timeless treasure has been lost. The Queen Mother represented the guts and hearts of the British peoples during WWII. What a remarkable lady she was! The world will miss her.

The commonwealth has lost a truly regal lady. She will be sadly missed.
Tracey Priestley, England

My mother remembers the King and Queen's tireless work during WW2. She was an inspiration then and spent her life being an inspiration to many others. This is a sad day for us all but she is now in a better place without pain. In this, our Queen's Jubilee year, we need more than ever to pull together as a nation to show our Queen that we sympathise with her loss and appreciate her for all she does for us. God bless the Queen Mother, God Save the Queen.
Mel O'Riordan, UK

I feel like I have lost my own grandmother today. I was born on 4th August in Scotland like the Queen Mother and have felt a certain "bond" with her. She will be sadly missed by so many people around the Commonwealth (as well as around the world) Rest in peace
Margaret, Brisbane Australia

She led by example, showing strength of character, determination and graciousness.

Jean, USA
Two summers ago during the Queen Mothers 100th Birthday celebrations terror threats closed part of London¿s transport system. I overheard an older lady state that the Queen Mother had not stopped during the blitz and the she would not stop for terror threats. That was the quality that the Queen Mother imbued in everyone. She led by example, showing strength of character, determination and graciousness. What a legacy!
Jean, USA

Deepest sympathies on the loss of a grand lady. She was an inspiration around the world.
Alison, US

I would like to pay tribute to great lady. As Queen and wife to George VI, and especially during the war years when Britain was fighting for its survival and to help preserve freedom for the world, and also for fifty years as Queen Mother, she gave her service unstintingly for the nation. I hope that this sad moment will give many in these cynical times occasion to consider how much we and our democracy owe to the institution of constitutional monarchy, and to the sense of duty it embodies. My deepest condolences to the royal family, and particularly to Her Majesty the Queen, who has lost a sister and a mother in the year of her Jubilee. God Save the Queen!
Laurence Hughes, UK

What a marvellous women. Her contribution to British society is unrivalled. She will be much missed, but we are comforted in the knowledge she is now with her daughter and beloved husband. Her legacy will continue forever. May she rest in eternal peace.
Robert Brearley, Malaga, Spain

My memories of the war years always had Queen Elizabeth in them, even though I was only a child

John Russell, Mexico
My memories of the war years always had Queen Elizabeth in them, even though I was only a child. She was one of the main people in Britain, in that conflict, to hold the country together. She will be always remembered fondly.
John Russell, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

The Queen Mother will be sadly missed by us all, her determination to get on with her life, even through her ill health in these past few years have been a great example to us all. Our sincere condolences go to the Queen and all the Royal Family in this difficult time.
Ben Macrow, United Kingdom

I wish to express my feelings of sadness at the death of a great lady. The fact that my own mother is so important to me, and that she will not last forever has made the Queen Mother's passing very personal to me. My mother, Mildred Johnson lived through the war in Liverpool and has a letter from the Queen Mother thanking her for taking in evacuees during the war. It is one of her most treasured possessions. My deepest sympathies are with the Royal Family.
Diane Galbraith, New Zealand

She was the last of the great monarchs, a mix of grace and strength of character. Her reign was short, yet she made a remarkable impact on history. No, she was history. Today a chapter in history has not been ended, but rather completed. RIP.

Dominique Verhaegen, Lokeren, Belgium

As a Brit abroad I am in shock at the passing of the Queen Mum. May she rest in peace.
Dawn Horton, USA

Let us honour the spirit of someone who meant so much to so many, both in Britain and abroad. She was a remarkable person, a woman of substance who embodied forgotten values of integrity, honour, valour, compassion, values which seem to be forgotten in this era of money and personal gain. My thoughts are with H.R.M. Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the Royal Family. God bless her soul.
Frank Schoofs, Belgium

I am not a Royalist, but we have all lost a British institution. People of my generation have lived with her all our lives, its like losing a friend, she will be sadly missed. My thoughts are with The Queen and the whole Royal family at this sad time.
Fevos Georgiou, Scotland

The only comfort we can have is that the whole world will weep with us.

Mary Morrison, England

The Nation without it's Mother shouldn't feel poorer because good God decided that she has now a greater role to play up there in Heaven.
Piotr Soltyski, Poland

She has been the rock against which the waves of hardships the Royal family has had to face could never shake. From a French point of you she was the embodiment of what a sacred monarchy looked like. Only the Queen can now represent it. God save the Queen.
Yoann Reynaud, France

Her strength and her devotion to service will never be duplicated

Hal Shane Burke, Jamaica
We today mourn the passing of a stalwart of this century, her strength and her devotion to service will never be duplicated nor replicated and it can never be imitated. Let us draw from her resilience and her inner fortitude to withstand the clear and present danger that faced her life during the war years. May God's light perpetual shine on her and the Royal family.
Hal Shane Burke, Jamaica

I have been an admirer of the Queen Mother for over 65 years and extend my deepest sympathy.
Lilllian Kinkennon, United States

She was an icon of all that is British, she was admired by everyone as a figure of strength and love in Britain. The fact that she endured the turbulent events of the entire 20th centaury proves what an outstanding woman she truly was.
Ben Bleasdale, England

Dear Sister Country,
You were so kind to hold our hands during recent events here in the U.S. Now it's our turn to hold England's hand. The Queen Mum was a very special Lady. We will miss Her.
Robin Stamper, California, U.S.A.

The Queen Mum was a symbol of stability in the monarchy, and also a woman of great courage and determination. As Queen during WWII, she supported both the King and Her Country in a way that commanded respect and love from both her subjects and those of us abroad. She will be missed. It is indeed a sad day.
Laura Kuhn, USA

The Queen Mother was always 'one of the people'.

Linda, England
We have said goodbye to a very brave and courageous lady, the likes of which we may not see again. The Queen Mother was someone to look up to with admiration and respect but who was always 'one of the people'. I send sincere condolences to the Royal Family at this very sad time.
Linda, Lancashire, England

I would like to offer my condolences to Queen Elizabeth II and her family. We, at the Solanki residents, thought of her as a great great person, and will miss her wonderful smile, and keeping her family united, throughout the years of good and bad
Harshad Solanki, England.UK

I don't believe anyone else in modern history has beheld so much change, so much hardship, nor controversy, yet retained a spirit of humility and genuine warmth. No wonder God blessed her days.
Anthony dos Remedios, Australia

I was privileged to meet the Queen Mother on several occasions. When she held my hand I went weak the knees. Her finest hour was during the war when she kept the troops up.
Cath Parry, England

A National Treasure

Gordon Ednie, Scotland
A National Treasure who will always be treasured in thoughts of people from all nations and more so felt in the nation she was born. God Bless You Elizabeth, our full thoughts are with the family you so treasured deeply.
Gordon Ednie, Scotland

I count myself richer to have lived during the lifetime of such a gallant Lady.
Francis Smith, Canada

I remember reading about her when I was a child, but the story I recall most clearly was about her sly sense of humor. The story went that one of her favorite tricks was to offer some privileged and honored guest some toffee, and as soon as their teeth were soundly stuck in the candy, say to the hapless soul, "Now tell me, dear boy, what do you think of Dickens?" May her humor, grace, and courage live on. My condolences to all of the Commonwealth.
Karyn, USA

I read the news a minute ago here in Brasil, and I'm feeling very sad to know that. To me, she's the Mother of Great Britan, Grandma of the Beatles. In fact, I think she's my Grandma too. My thoughts and special vibes to this very special woman.
Enio Martins, Brasil

I'll remember the Queen Mother waving back to me, after I had spotted her and given her a little wave, whilst she was on a visit to the City Of London. Like many, I have a memory of her to treasure forever.
Alfred O'Coyle, London, England

She saved her nation during World War II.

Peter M. Franzese, New York, USA

Peter M. Franzese, New York, USA

I swore my allegiance in 1950 and still do in death.

A great person in a time of few great people

John Ropte, USA

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Queen and all her family. The Queen Mum was beloved here in Canada too, a most gracious and lovely lady.
Tina Isaak, Canada

It is with great sadness that I learned of the Queen Mother's passing. She represented true values of a whole family and loyalty to her people. When she decided, against the advice of many, to remain in Britain during WWII and not go to Canada she showed her devotion to the people of Britain. A great person in a time of few great people.
John Ropte, United States of America

End of an era... Deeply loved by so many people.
DR, London, UK

With the possible exception of Sir Winston Churchill, no one person better represented the tenacity, courage and sheer will of the English people during their darkest hour. She will be sorely missed.

Roger Pieters, UK

The Nation has lost its grandmother.

It is a great shame that such a lovely lady should have to depart this world. The Queen Mother was a gentle, noble, loving and caring individual and she will be much missed, not just by the Royal Family but also by countless millions of people around the world. I thank God for allowing her to go in peace and while asleep. My deepest sympathies go to the Royal Family and especially the Queen.

The Queen Mother was a British institution - we cannot replace her

Mary Hutchings, Great Britain

I must express my sadness of a true Royal and a great woman. It wounds a nation and we suffer the loss of the very icon and regal grace of British Monarchy. She will be sorely missed.
Rodrigo Sanchez, UK

My own mother died at 89 two years ago, so I know how the Queen feels. My Mum adored the Queen Mother and was her greatest "fan" from the early 1920s. Mum had all the books about the Queen Mother and a commemorative plate above her bed. I like to think they have now met in Heaven. The Queen Mother was a British institution - we cannot replace her.
Mary Hutchings, Great Britain

She has always been there - my admiration for her and King George has never wavered. They had to come to the throne when Edward abdicated, took over with good grace, and brought the country together. In World War II they stayed on in London with us while we endured the blitz. No scandal, no selfishness, the Queen Mother is the last of a very special breed. It is sad beyond words to see her go.
Pat Lockhart, USA

What a loss for the Royal Family. She will always live in our hearts!
The Beer Family, Alaska, USA

I cannot understand why I feel so affected by the passing of a lady whom I never met, never spoke to and who didn't know I existed. Perhaps it was her grace and demeanour or her obvious values. Or more likely, perhaps it is because she was MY 'Queen Mum.'
Steve Bates, UK

A most remarkable and respected person has passed away

Tomás Buehler, Switzerland

I am so deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of the Queen Mother. She was a gracious and most wonderful human being. She will be sorely missed. My condolences to the Royal Family. God Save The Queen.
Susan Moore, USA

My deepest sympathies go to HM Queen Elizabeth II and to her family. A most remarkable and respected person has passed away today.
Tomás Buehler, Switzerland

I had the great honour and pleasure of meeting HRH The Queen Mother on stage at the London Palladium after a performance of "Showboat" in 1991. She was charming, dignified and knowledgeable. What was amazing was that she attended the premiere of the same show in this country back in 1925. A very humbling experience for me, I can tell you.
Richard Halton, England

We can all learn from the Queen Mother that dignity, grace and acceptance of responsibility can make a difference.
David Giltrow, USA

It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of the Queen Mother. She was an inspiration to all of us who lived through the dark days of WWII.She will live forever in our memories. My thoughts go out to her family, especially to the Queen and Prince Charles.

Such people provide light in darkness and hope in the most difficult of times

Andrew Riggs, Saudi Arabia

The end of an era, a great loss to the nation. Her legacy of devotion to duty to her country serves as an example to all, regardless of age. Rest in peace with your beloved Bertie.
Anita Cooper, UK

We are lucky that God provides us with such people. They provide light in darkness. They provide hope in the most difficult of times and the amazing thing is that they have only to smile. This smile will be missed, but fondly remembered.
Andrew Riggs, Saudi Arabia

My family would like to say that we thought she was a wonderful person and will be sadly missed. God save the Queen.
Phil and Gina Barrett, Great Britain

I was saddened to hear of the death of the Queen Mother. My prayers and sympathy go out to The Royal Family and the British public, especially Her Majesty The Queen, and Prince Charles. They had a very special and close relationship and I feel badly that Prince Charles was unable to be at Windsor when his grandmother died.

She was a brave, spirited and gracious woman. Her courageousness during WWII and her loyalty to her people was unfailing. Whether you knew her or not she seemed like everyone's sweet grandmother. She will be missed by many people, but will live in the hearts of her family and the British people forever. May Your Majesty, The Queen Mother rest in eternal peace.
Ann, USA

A gracious woman with a marvellous personality

Lynne Jones, British Columbia

Canada mourns a Queen whose spirit and effervescence as shown on her first tour of this country in 1939 (and many times thereafter!), helped pull us through the most trying times of WW2 and lead us bravely into the new post-war world. She will be sorely missed.
Geoff Winnington-Ball, Ontario, Canada

Let it be a comfort to you Her Majesty to know that the entire world will mourn this loss with you.

Roslyn Sadik, Egypt
I wish to offer my deepest heart felt condolences to Queen Elizabeth 11, the Royal family and to all the peoples of Britain and the Commonwealth for the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother may she rest in peace. She was an adored and revered lady in this life and now she will have a special resting place in heaven. She was brave and courageous in face of adversity and she was so loyal and devoted to her late Husband, King George V1, her children and their families and her extended world family - she was a role model for all women. A true lady who received the love, respect and admiration of all. As a child growing up in Australia I felt as though I had two Grandmothers, my own and the Queen Mum. Her daughter, Queen Elizabeth 11 will deeply miss her Mother and also her sister in this her Golden Jubilee Year. Let it be a comfort to you Her Majesty to know that the entire world will mourn this loss with you. How much I sincerely loved and will miss your Mother.
Roslyn Sadik, Australian living in Egypt

Heaven will rarely see a woman of such charm, grace and gentility pass through its pearly gates. Every time I saw her I smiled. My deepest sympathy to the Royal Family and to all of England.

Elizabeth, born a commoner, died a Queen.

Deborah, UK
Elizabeth, born a commoner, died a Queen. Served her Country and her Commonwealth well. Loved by a Nation and the World. Thank you from all your subjects wherever they may be. Thank you and Goodbye.
Deborah, United Kingdom

I have always greatly admired her late majesty the Queen Mother. She, as well as her majesty the queen, is an example of what makes modern monarchy an excellent form of government. However, now that she has departed, more attention will be paid to her opinions and actions that may in themselves not reflect as admirably as one would hope. But, I take such issues as an example that one need not be perfect to be a role model. My sincere condolences to all who acknowledged her as queen.
Phil Mattox, USA

I just learned of The Queen Mother's death. I was born in the UK and left when I was 10. I am a proud South African and have been here for 20 years now but she has always reminded me of my pride in my British birthright. God bless her soul. Love to you all.
Ikram Abrahams, South Africa

Having had the pleasure of meeting the Queen Mum, and being there on her 100th birthday - it is an extremely sad occasion today. My sincere condolences to the family, and the rest of a country, and the world mourning the death of a very special person.
Liz Williamson, Cape Town South Africa

I will remember her for her appearances in public and particularly in August 2000 at her 100th Birthday Celebrations.

Ben Lord, England
What a terrible hour for the British People. I am literally "glued" to the television. I first found out at 17:15 that the Queen Mother had died. My first reaction was "this can't be true". She was a remarkable lady who touched so many. I can hardly believe we are talking about her in the past tense. At 15, the activities of the monarchy interest me deeply and this awful news has touched me immensely. So soon after the death of her daughter, the Queen has to get over not just one but two losses to her. Britain has lost a real lady and a true ambassador. I will remember her for her appearances in public and particularly in August 2000 at her 100th Birthday Celebrations. May the Queen Mother Rest in Peace. God Save the Queen!
Ben Lord, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England

Today is a sad day. As a child I was always fascinated with the Royal Family, especially the Queen Mother. She had a sparkle about her. I am deeply saddened to read about the loss of such a cherished individual. I didn't know her, or have ever heard her speak a word. But I know in my heart that she was and will be remembered as one of the greatest women of the 20th century. I am upset as if I loss one of my own. But I rejoice because she is no longer in pain, and now will sit side by side with King George VI and Princess Margaret and God.
Paul A. Harris Jr., United States

May she rest in Perfect Peace.

The Queen Mother was a great lady, a great Queen, and above all a shining example to all who cherish the simple values of respect for one's fellow man, courage, and dignity. Whatever her foibles, a truly remarkable human being has departed this earth. May she rest in peace.

She was an institution in her own right

Chris Saunders, Norway
It is indeed very sad, the news of the Queen Mother's demise. Not only a mainstay of the Royal Family as such, she was an institution in her own right, a unifying symbol across the years. Indeed, her longevity means that for practically all of us, she has been part of the fabric, the context of our lives since our own first breath. Her death binds us together too, for another moment at least.
Chris Saunders, Norway

This is a sad day for Great Britain and for the World. We have lost a cherished icon. The Queen Mother was the epitome of grace and diplomacy, during many of Great Britain's most trying times. I weep with you, dear England.

She was a class act and she will surely be missed. I had the good fortune to see her during her Washington DC visit about 11 years ago. She was regal, warm but not a snob - the perfect royal. God bless and rest in peace.

A unique lady who will never be replaced

Ben Lord, Suffolk, England

I just can't believe how soon since the death of Princess Margaret that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother has died. As soon as I saw the news, my first reaction was "this can't be true".

Such a vulnerable time for the Queen, not only has she got to get over the loss of her only sister but of her mother, at 102. Also for the fact that it is her Golden Jubilee year. A unique lady who will never be replaced. A true ambassador for the UK.
Ben Lord, Suffolk, England

I feel that a bit of our great nation died today. My own sorrow to see such a wonderful woman pass away, she will be sadly missed. May God welcome her into his kingdom for our loss is surely his gain. God Bless The Queen Mother. My deepest sympathies go to HM Queen Elizabeth II and to her family.

A great light has gone out of the world

Sandra Duncan, Great Britain

The Queen Mother's appeal almost universally transcended the divisions in public opinion regarding the monarchy. She was not only the head of her family, but a longstanding figurehead for the rest of us.

She played a vital part in the survival of the institution which she represented, and likewise was a much-valued supporter of this country's subjects during its hardest trials.
Tom Bell, UK
