Talking Point

Is astrology just science fiction?

Astrology is big business. It is also a big con - or at least so says Dr David Whitehouse, News online's Science expert.

Story in full

Planetary charts, star sign analysis - you name it and millions of us buy it.

But "there is not the slightest bit of serious scientific evidence that it works," says David.

So if astrology is all pie in the sky, why do so many spend time stargazing? Is it all a money-making scam? Or is there really something in it - as the Mystic Megs of this world would have us believe?

Belief in astrology is on the up. In America, one quarter of adults think "that there is something in it."

Followers say that their horoscopes really have come true. And if they don't, the astrologers explain that their skill, though science, is not exact.

But back to non-believers like David. They say that astrology is pure guesswork - It could not possibly be true.

And they add that if there is anything in it, tell us the lottery numbers - and the World Cup champions too.

What do you think?

Is astrology just science fiction?

Some comment so far:

It's all al bit of harmless fun. We are all rather self-obesessed and predictions as to our futures satisfy our vanity...
Eve Morrison, US

I read my horoscope religiously every day and I go to a mystic at least twice a year...
Clare Mann, UK
