Tour line-ups

ONCE manager Monolo Saiz (left) greets fellow Spaniard Fernando Escartin

Twenty teams of nine cyclists started the Tour this year.

Le Tour de France
Each squad names a team leader, whose number ends in the number one.

This can either be a competitor aiming for a high overall finish - such as Bobby Julich or Pavel Tonkov, or the team's best bet for stage wins - for example Mario Cipollini.

An increasing list of the 180 riders will "abandon" the race due to illness or injury. Keep up to date with the full list here.
