Rosset takes London prize
Marc Rosset: Another "dream" performance Switzerland's Marc Rosset stunned Russian top seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov to claim his 15th career title in the AXA Cup at the London Arena.
Rosset, unseeded for the £500,000 event, produced the sort of form that won him an Olympic gold in Barcelona eight years ago to claim a shock 6-4 6-4 straight sets
win.
"It's been two dream weeks for me," Rosset said. "I won in Marseille and now here." Kafelnikov had been in superb form on Saturday as he crushed British number two Greg Rusedski in the semi-finals to claim top spot in the ATP Champions Race from Andre Agassi.
But he was never allowed the chance to settle by the 6ft 7in Rosset who deservedly claimed the near £90,000 top prize and his second tournament win of the year.
Rosset, 29, took the initiative in the first set with an early break for a 2-1 lead only for Kafelnikov to break straight back and level the scores. But the 26-year-old Russian was clearly not in top form and his frustration began to show, slamming a ball into the net after a wayward volley had given Rosset the second and crucial break. Kafelnikov, who won this event in Battersea Park in 1998, again struggled to hold his serve in the second set, twice saving breaking points to keep his nose in front.
Rosset was in determined mood, however, and was not to be denied, breaking for a 4-3 lead and saving three break points to complete victory in 1hr 16 minutes.
After the match, Kafelnikov, who is set to be named world number one on Monday, said: "Nothing went wrong. "I did the best that I could do, but I came up a little short." |
