Jones-Hughes gets the nod

Jones-Hughes impressed when he made his debut last Friday

Jason Jones-Hughes will make his first start for Wales when they clash with Japan at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

The BBC's David Parry-Jones reports on the changes made to the Welsh team ahead of their clash against Japan
Jones-Hughes, who was born in Australia and needed IRB clearance to make him available for Wales during the tournament, will play on the right wing after impressing as a replacement against Argentina on Friday.

He replaces Gareth Thomas, who is on the bench after starting last week's Pool D victory, while Allan Bateman replaces Dafydd James on the left-wing.

Scott Quinnell is suffering from a leg strain
Second row Mike Voyle comes in for Chris Wyatt, but doubts remain over the back-row after Scott Quinnell suffered a leg strain in training.

The injury means he could miss out, and, if he is unavailable, Geraint Lewis will play at number eight with Martyn Williams at flanker.

If Quinnell does line up, Williams will be among the replacements, and Lewis will be a straight substitute for Colin Charvis who is suspended for 14 days for punching.

Coach Graham Henry said: "We have kept the spine of the team who played against Argentina.

"A decision on the fitness of Scott Quinnell will be made later in the week, but we are confident he will be fit to play.

"Wings Gareth Thomas and Dafydd James both played well, but we obviously need to give Allan Bateman and Jason Jones-Hughes their chances.

"Both are fine attackers, and we have to attack the Japanese.

"Mike Voyle has played well in recent internationals, and this is a chance to rest Chris Wyatt and for him to prepare himself for future matches."

Team:

S Howarth (Newport); J Jones-Hughes (New South Wales), M Taylor (Swansea), S Gibbs (Swansea), A Bateman (Northampton); N Jenkins (Cardiff), R Howley (Cardiff, capt); P Rogers (Newport), G Jenkins (Swansea), D Young (Cardiff), C Quinnell (Cardiff), M Voyle (Llanelli), G Lewis (Pontypridd) or M Williams (Cardiff), S Quinnell (Llanelli) or G Lewis (Pontypridd), B Sinkinson (Neath). Replacements: G Thomas (Cardiff), S Jones (Llanelli), D Llewellyn (Newport), C Wyatt (Llanelli) or M Williams (Cardiff), B Evans (Swansea), A Lewis (Cardiff), J Humphreys (Cardiff).
