Saracens swat Wasps away in final

Stunning Saracens were crowned English Cup kings for the first time in their history after a seven-try demolition of London rivals Wasps at Twickenham.

Ian Robertson reports from Twickenham (39'')
Saracens, who are still in contention for the league title, blew Wasps away in the Tetley's Bitter showpiece through a spectacular first half exhibition that took them out of sight at 29-6.

Superstars Michael Lynagh and Philippe Sella, both making their last big match appearances before retirement, made significant contributions.

French centre Sella scoring a sixth-minute try and Australian Lynagh kicking five conversions and a drop goal.

Wasps' woeful tackling cost them dear during a one-sided opening, Sella, wing Ryan Constable and full-back Gavin Johnson all taking full advantage before England lock Danny Grewcock pounced just before half-time.

Wasps, a successful league title defence long since a distant dream, were out of contention, although they did manage two consolation tries in four second-half minutes from flanker Paul Volley and wing Shane Roiser.

Saracens' romp equalled the highest English Cup final total.

Bath racked up 48 in crushing Gloucester eight years ago, while the 66-point aggregate was a final record.

Saracens' celebrations will be brief, given that they entertain Northampton in a vital Premiership clash next Thursday night.

If Saracens win, and title rivals Newcastle lose either of their remaining fixtures against Bath or Harlequins, then the Championship will also be collected.

Elated Saracens skipper Tony Diprose punched the air in delight as his side became the first Tetley's Bitter Cup recipients, a glowing reward in glorious sunshine conditions for an outstanding Saracens campaign.
