Cardiff snap up Springbok star
The move effectively brings Muller's SA career to an end
The move effectively brings Muller's SA career to an end
Cardiff have signed Springboks centre Pieter Muller on a two-year deal.

Bloemfontein-born Muller had preliminary talks with Cardiff a fortnight ago and signed his contract in Durban on Wednesday morning.

Muller, 31, who has played 10 times for Natal Sharks this year, made his Test debut for South Africa in 1992 and has won 33 caps.

I was very impressed with the Cardiff set-up when I met their officials and team management recently

He played in last year's World Cup quarter-final victory over England in Paris but is not in the current 28-man squad for the two-Test series against England.

The move effectively calls time on his Springboks career because coach Nick Mallett tends not to consider players who go overseas to play their club rugby.

Muller replaces Welsh international centre Leigh Davies, who recently agreed a two-year contract with Bristol.

"I was very impressed with the Cardiff set-up when I met their officials and team management recently," Muller said.

"Cardiff is a very famous club with long links with South Africa. I have always wanted to play club rugby in the UK and I can think of no better team to join.

"I had two happy weeks with Neil Jenkins and Rob Howley playing for the Barbarians last month and I know that I am joining an ambitious set-up with their eyes on success in the Heineken Cup next year.

"I am looking forward to the challenge tremendously."
