Rampant England smash Griquas
Worsley
Worsley put England back on course
Griqualand West 16-55 England

England produced an immense second-half comeback on Tuesday to wipe out their latest South African tour opponents, Griqualand West.

The signals were bad in the opening minutes of the second half, when the tourists slipped to a 16-10 deficit.

Griqualand have an impressive record against touring sides, dispensing with Ireland by a huge margin in 1998 and holding the 1996 All Blacks to an 18-18 draw.

The situation worsened when captain Ben Clarke left the field injured, but England responded by suddenly opened up with a six-try salvo to top a half-century of points and leave the home side reeling.

Flanker Joe Worsley and centre Leon Lloyd snatched a brace of tries each, with Will Greenwood, Steve Hanley and Steve Borthwick chipping in for touchdowns of their own.

Fly-half Ali Hephe bounced back from his sin-binning for a technical infringement to finish the match with 20 points from all seven conversions and two penalties.

Griqualand can take some consolation from the fact they they were missing several players through injury, but still managed to rattle Clive Woodward's midweek side.

Former Sale number eight Janneman Brand claimed a try to put daylight between Griquas and the visitors, then fullback Leon van den Heever converted and also kicked a 37th-minute penalty.

Worsley rumbled over just before the break to pull England close again, only for Van den Heever to embarrass them again with two more penalties.

Concerted attack by the tourists soon began to open up gaps, and that was all the encouragement they needed to cut loose with a deluge of unanswered points.
