Wales 40 - 33 French Barbarians

The French Ba-Ba's proved to be more than a handful for Wales, making the home team hang on for victory at the Millennium Stadium.

It was the first occasion a major rugby match was played under a closed roof, and the Gallic guests were determined to ruin the party.

The France national team are due to play Romania in Bucharest on Sunday, so there were many star names missing for the Barbarians line-up.

There were a total of 11 tries in a very open and competitive game, played in front of a small crowd of 25,000.

The game itself began at a steady pace, but then the Wales pack decided to take advantage of their early dominance, with two tries from second-row Ian Gough.

Fluent rugby

But the French replied with touchdowns from right wing Alwin Joubert and centre Raphael Chanal.

The contest was certainly livening up, with both sides playing some fluent rugby.

Seconds before the interval, Wales scrum-half Richard Smith, on his first start, went over to give his side a 21-14 lead.

The home crowd were then treated to a brace of tries after the break, when first replacement scrum-half Gareth Cooper and then Matt Cardey touched down for their respective scores.

Graham Henry's side found themselves in a commanding position, but the Barbarians fought back when flanker Patrick Furet and left-wing Philipo Toala went over to reduce the gap.

Wales fought back through Chris Wells, but Russian lock Sergei Sergeev scored the final try of the game for the assembled French side.
