Championship leader Michael Schumacher
"I saw the opportunity to go through the grass"

Mansell inspires Coulthard move

Hakkinen, Coulthand and Schumacher acknowledge the crowd
David Coulthard revealed he used former Silverstone hero Nigel Mansell as inspiration as he produced a race-winning overtaking move in the British Grand Prix.

With leader Rubens Barrichello ahead of him, the McLaren driver decided to try to emulate Mansell, who made the British Grand Prix his own during his illustrious career, with a sweeping assault on the Brazilian.

The spectacular move produced the required results and Coulthard did not look back as he went on to take the chequered flag.

Inspiration: Mansell was a Silverstone cult hero
"I feel fantastic," said Coulthard, who also triumphed in 1999. "This is a great feeling to win your home race two years in a row.

"I developed a small gearbox problem and was beginning to prepare myself for a cry at what might happen, but fortunately the car got home.

"I thought I was going to be stuck behind Rubens until the stop, but he made a small mistake.

"I got it right and got a run on him and remembered Nigel Mansell's move on Nelson Piquet a few years ago and thought I'd give it a go."

Schu stuck in the mud

The other notable moment in an otherwise unremarkable race came right at the start when world championship leader Michael Schumacher was outshone by British youngster Jenson Button.

Schumacher's chances of victory were effectively ended by his stuttering efforts on the grid, but he eventually worked his way up to third place.

Coulthard crosses the finish line for a second GB win
The German believed the wet conditions hampered his start: "I tried the opportunity to go through grass which you can normally do here, but because of the rain I was just spinning and going nowhere.

"I lost momentum and then saw Button go past me; then (Jacques) Villeneuve, then Ralf (Schumacher).

"I had a good fight with him for the first few corners but I had to back off because he seemed keen to close the door and I did not want a clash with my brother.

"I ran for most of the race in eighth and was wondering how many points I could lose to the other guys, so it has worked out well finishing third. I am very happy with that."
