Faldo fights to keep in touch

Nick Faldo struggled on Pebble Beach's final stretch
Nick Faldo suffered double misery over Pebble Beach's closing five holes as he battled to keep his US Open challenge on track.

Faldo was forced into a 4am wake-up call to complete his first round, having ended the first day in joint third position at four under par, just two behind Tiger Woods.

But the 42-year-old, who has dropped to 180th in golf's world rankings, slipped back to one over par after 23 holes of hard work an another fog-delayed day.

Resuming at the 14th, Faldo started day two with a bogey six and suffered a double bogey at the 17th after he plugged in a bunker and took two to get out.

He made took the sting out of the disappointment by holing from 35 feet at the last to complete a first-round 69.

Faldo then had a break of only 45 minutes before beginning his second round and bogeys at the second and fifth looked set to signal an alarming slide.

But Faldo, who is yet to record a top 20 finish this season, responded with back-to-back birdies and was back to two under par entering the final five holes.

That stretch caught him out again though, as Faldo bogeyed three of the last five holes, including another six at the 14th.

"I struggled at the end and I lost a bit of confidence in my swing," he admitted afterwards.

Faldo is in the perhaps unique position of having his sports psychologist, Kjell Enhager, alongside him at every hole after the Swede became his caddie earlier this week.

"Kjell's more nervous than me," joked Faldo.

"After all he has been telling me about the mental side of things for the past year, now I'm telling him to do some deep breathing."
