Chapman reigns in Rio

Journeyman Chapman has finally found the big time
Englishman Roger Chapman beat Ireland's Padraig Harrington in a play-off to win the Rio 500 Years Open - the first European Tour event to be held in South America.

Chapman triumphed on the second extra hole to claim his first victory in 19 years on the tour.

Chapman and Harrington both finished on 18-under-par totals of 270 after the four-round competition.

Most pundits were tipping European Ryder Cup star Harrington to make his pedigree count in the last round.

Harrington found the water at the wrong moment
But the overnight leader drove into the water on the second extra hole leaving Chapman to make par and seal victory.

Argentina's Jose Coceres took third place at 17-under 271.

Sweden's Joakim Heggman and Argentine Jorge Berendt tied for fourth at 15-under 273.

Chapman admitted he was on the point of giving up at the end of last season when he lost his tour card.

Then the tragedy of Payne Stewart changed his mind.

"When I lost my card I thought my whole world had fallen apart," explained the winner.

"I had decided I wasn't going to go to tour school and I would take another job, something else in golf.

"But then Payne Stewart died. He wanted to play golf and couldn't and I could play golf but wouldn't. I took a serious look at myself and went to tour school and got my card back.

"Now I'm absolutely on top of the world. The monkey on my back was so big it was almost a gorilla!"
