Lehman takes the money

Lehman Tom Lehman took the $1m first prize

Tom Lehman secured the lucrative first prize in the inaugural $3.5m World Challenge with a final round 3-under-par 67.

The 1996 British Open winner edged ahead of David Duval with a birdie on the final hole.

It's a big win for me. To get a sponsor exemption and end up beating the field is great.

Duval, who shared the third round lead with Lehman, carded an even-par 70 after bogeying the 18th.

Tiger Woods stumbled to the worst round of the day, a 6-over-par 76, to finish at 2-over-par 282.

Woods began the day tied for third place with Fiji's Vijay Singh at 4-under-par, six strokes back.

Singh finished third at 5-under-par 275 after posting a 1-under-par 69 in the final round.

Beginning the day with a pair of bogeys over the first four holes, Lehmann sank birdies on five of the final six.

But, according to the Ryder Cup hero, it was a saved par on the 12th that gave him the winning momentum.

"That was the most crucial putt for me," he said.

"I was struggling early, but once I made that putt on No. 12 it was like the flood gates opened."

Lehman's birdie on the final hole was from eight feet and set up by a seven-iron. Birdies on holes 13-16 were highlighted by a 20-footer on the par-4 fourteenth and an 18-footer on the sixteenth.

Duval missed the green to the left on the last and chipped to about 18 feet.

Woods recorded two bogeys and three double-bogeys as he finished 10th after entering the day tied for third.

"To be very honest with you, I was very lucky to be where I was at yesterday after two rounds of nine holes because I wasn't hitting the ball well," he said.

British Open champion Paul Lawrie of Scotland had a disappointing finish, shooting a four-over-par 74 for even par for the tournament.
