Japanese GP qualifying in pictures

Ferrari's Michael Schumacher seized pole position on Saturday for the deciding race of this year's Formula One world championship. Reigning world champion Mika Hakkinen will be second on the grid at Suzuka for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix with champion-in-waiting Eddie Irvine in fifth place after qualifying.

Schumacher, rounding a corner in his Ferrari, said: "If I win, he only needs to be fourth; that is one strategy, and at the moment things look good for that."

Jean Alesi (right), who drives for the Sauber-Petronas team, said Hakkinen was at fault after they collided in the chicane and skidded off the track.

Irvine, who leads Hakkinen by four points, crashed after posting the day's fifth-fastest lap, behind David Coulthard, McLaren's other driver, and Heinz-Harald Frenzen of Jordan.

Hakkinen explains his game plan for Sunday: "Go to the starting grid and see what happens at the lights. Once they change we can start planning. Those are the first tactics."

Hakkinen will be crowned champion if the result ends the same way as the qualifying grid, although the chances of that happening are small.
