Rangers 3-0 Dundee United

A three goal burst in the second-half was enough to ensure that Rangers claimed all the points against Dundee United at Ibrox.

The strikes all came between the 62nd and 73rd minute from the boots of Jorg Albertz, Billy Dodds and Rod Wallace.

It was no less than the leaders deserved as they pumelled United with a blizzard of shots.

There were periods, especially in the first half, when Rangers boss Dick Advocaat must have thought that he would need a miracle to see a shot go past the inspired Alan Combe in the Tangerines' goal.

The keeper performed heroics in the first half, although Rangers were also guilty of some poor finishing.

Former Leeds star Wallace should have put the Scottish Premier champions a goal to the good after just two minutes.

73 mins Wallace grabs a deserved third
Winger Andrei Kanchelskis was handed the ball on a plate by United's Siggi Jonsson on the edge of the area.

The Russian drove the ball at Combe, but the keeper failed to hold on to the ball.

Unfortunately for Gers, Wallace only managed to scoop his effort over the bar from five yards out.

A couple of minutes later German Albertz had a go with one of his trademark long-distant strikes, but his effort flew narrowly wide of the goal.

Paul Sturrock's side had a sole shot on goal during the opening 45 minutes, but that was enough to trouble Stefan Klos in the Rangers net.

Attacking option

United star Joachim Ferraz made space for himself at the edge of the box and struck a vicious shot which rattled Klos' crossbar, before Gers defender Arthur Numan headed the ball away to safety.

Advocaat decided to dabble with his team during the interval by replacing Tugay with the more attacking option of Scottish international Neil McCann.

The change almost made an instant impact on the match when McCann played a killer ball into the box for Wallace, only for the linesman to ajudge it offside.

But United must have realised that their luck could not last much longer.

United States international Claudio Reyna stormed down the left and played a telling ball into the box for Albertz.

The German struck his first shot which was saved by Combe, but his parry landed at the feet of the midfielder, who made no mistake with his follow up.

Four minutes later former Dundee United hero Billy Dodds made it 2-0 for the Ibrox side, when the influential Albertz laid the ball into the path of the Scottish international who struck home from 12 yards.

And the marauding Wallace wrapped the game up for Advocaat's men, when McCann played another ball through to the diminutive striker, who this time was allowed to continue and slot the ball past the unlucky Combe.
