McMillan leaves it late

Kemble of Motherwell tackles St Johnstone's Lowndes

St Johnstone 1-1 Motherwell

A late strike from Stephen McMillan earned Motherwell a point at McDiarmid Park.

Off-side decisions dominated the scrappy early exchanges, until the home side took control of proceedings, forcing Well keeper Ady Goram into a number of good saves.

Saints took the lead just before the break when Paul Kane found John Paul McBride on the right and he played the ball to Graham Jones, who made no mistake from six yards out.

McMillan's equaliser was well worth waiting for, as he claimed a point with a thunderous shot from 25 yards with just five minutes on the clock.

Back on track

Motherwell boss Billy Davies is convinced his side's problems are behind them, after finally getting back to meaningful action.

Graeme Jones celebrates his goal
"Our last game was on December 18 and we were unsuccessful in getting a midweek game so I expected us to be rusty and we were," he said.

"We started the game well but lost a lot of momentum midway through and ended up playing catch-up - but it's great to come here and get a point.

"We didn't perform well today but we have to just put everything that's happened recently behind us and move on."

Saint's boss Sandy Clark said: "I was disappointed not to win especially after going in front. We had lots of opportunities to win it in the second half.

"We played good football today but we're up against a world-class goalkeeper and that made our task more difficult.

"Early on both teams gave the ball away a lot. I thought the teams went into the game on equal terms - but I felt we should have won."
