Front pair earn points for Hearts

Hearts 2-0 Dundee

Hearts returned from Portugal to get back to winning ways at Tynecastle.

Dundee were lucky to hold the Edinburgh side at bay early on and goalkeeper Robert Douglas did well to tip Scott Severin's shot onto the crossbar.

Hearts broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with a low shot from Gary Wales.

At the other end Shaun McSkimming also hit the bar with a 25-yard drive before Darren Jackson seized on a bad clearance to make it 2-0 and secure the points for Hearts.

Strike duo praised

Hearts boss Jim Jefferies was delighted with the performances of his front men Jackson and Wales.

He said: "They both worked very well together. Jackson used his experience and I told him that young Wales would look to him for help.

"I have given young Gary some stick because he needs to start proving himself.

"Gary is the young guy who did well at Hamilton and he has made a big step up and he already thought that he had made it - but he still has things to learn.

"He took his goal really well and looked good throughout the whole match."

Dundee boss Jocky Scott refused to blame his goalkeeper Douglas after his poor clearance preceded Hearts' second goal.

Scott said: "It was an uncharacteristic mistake by Robert. He made some great saves apart from that.

"He's a really good goalkeeper but unfortunately at 1-0 we were still in the game and putting Hearts under pressure - and losing that second goal just made it that bit harder, giving us a bit more to do."
