Hibs are millennium masters

Hearts 0-3 Hibernian

Hibernian have won the last Edinburgh derby of the millennium with an emphatic 3-0 drubbing of local rivals Hearts.

It was Hibs' biggest win there since their famous 7-0 pasting of Hearts in 1973.

Match facts
18 mins: Lehmann fires in from 20 yards
27 mins: Sauzee rifles in through heavy traffic
90 mins: Miller seals the win
The victory came courtesy of three outstanding long-range goals by Dirk Lehmann, Franck Sauzee and Kenneth Miller.

On a freezing night in Scotland, not even the inclusion of new £400,000 signing Antti Niemi could inspire Hearts as they watched everything go right for the visitors.

Hibs nearly claimed the lead in the opening minutes through Finn Mixu Paatelainen, who headed inches wide.

But they didn't have long to wait for their first goal as Russell Latapy played the ball through to Lehmann who struck a sweet low drive from the edge of the area that rattled into the net just inside the left upright.

Hearts' best chance came five minutes later when Darren Jackson headed a sitter over the bar.

The visitors struck again on 27 mins with Sauzee thundering onto a ball that had been half cleared and blasting the volley through seemingly impenetrable traffic for the score.

Both sides enjoyed chances of varying quality after the interval in what was a physical and highly aggressive encounter.

Neither side lacked for commitment, but in the end it was Hibernian who enjoyed all the best luck.

Just as it looked as if the match would end in a thoroughly respectable 2-0 win for the men from down the road, substitute Miller, on for Lehmann, added the finishing touches.

With Hearts pressing upfield for a late goal, the ball came to the striker on the break and he raced unmarked to the edge of the area before curling in goal number three in the last minute of regulation time.
