Scots seek hangover cure
Scotland's domestic competition returns this weekend as the nation looks for a cure to its Euro 2000 play-off hangover. The highlights are battles between the Glasgow giants and their Edinburgh counterparts, while bottom club Aberdeen do not play until Sunday. Rangers v Hibernian Scotland duo Barry Ferguson and Colin Hendry are missing with rib and knee injuries respectively. Sergio Porrini is also ruled out of the Rangers defence with an ankle problem, meaning a recall for Dariusz Adamczuk. Skipper John Hughes returns to the Hibernian squad after injury but his comeback is likely to take him no further than the bench. Shaun Dennis is also available again after missing the 2-0 win over Kilmarnock. Hearts v Celtic Gary Wales is likely to be sidelined despite returning to training after illness. But with Gary McSwegan fit again after a hamstring strain Hearts should have enough options in attack. Celtic midfielder Craig Burley is missing with a groin injury while Paul Lambert is ruled out. Olivier Tebily is on international duty with the Ivory Coast, but Stephane Mahe returns. Dundee v Motherwell Dundee's Willie Miller, Lee Maddison and Robbie Raeside are all sidelined through injury and may not return before the New Year. Nicky Banger, a recent recruit from Oxford, is poised for a debut but is likely to be among the substitutes. Stevie Woods will continue in goal for Motherwell as Andy Goram is still sidelined because of a calf injury. Striker Don Goodman has picked up a knock and is rated extremely doubtful by manager Billy Davies. Kilmarnock v Dundee Utd Midfielder Martin Baker is ruled out of the match as he is suspended. Kilmarnock are desperate to move away from the foot of the table and will again look to Frenchman Christophe Cocard to provide the goal threat. Scotland striker Billy Dodds was given the day off training today to help recuperate from his international duty against England. Steven Thompson is fit again but Joaquim Ferraz is a doubt for United because of a shoulder problem. Sunday: St Johnstone v Aberdeen Saints midfielder Nick Dasovic has returned to training and could be fit. John Paul McBride and Allan Preston both played in Roddy Grant's testimonial game which leaves Alan Kernaghan as the major fitness doubt. New signing Jamie Clark could come into contention in Aberdeen's defence after moving to Pittodrie on a three-month deal from playing in America. Argentinian Juan Cobian is also pressing for a start. |
