Spencer finally breaks Hearts

Hearts 1-1 Motherwell

Motherwell's John Spencer was the visitors' hero with a late equaliser after Gary McSwegan had scored as early as the eight minute.

The men from Lanarkshire had dominated most of an entertaining game yet missed a succession of chances.

But just when it looked as if the home side would hold on, Spencer pounced on a Stephen McMillan cross to claim a point and take Motherwell's unbeaten spell to four matches.

Hearts' goal followed a flowing move from Steve Fulton and Stephane Adam, who combined to send Gary Naysmith clear on the left.

His looping cross fell perfectly for McSwegan to bullet a header past Stevie Woods.

Hearts then survived claims for a first half penalty when Gary Locke appeared to jump into Kevin Twaddle following a Michael Doesburg cross.

Motherwell pressure

Motherwell almost equalised in the 28th minute when a well-struck free-kick by Ged Brannan was saved by Gilles Rousset low to his left.

Grant Murray headed against his own bar and Lee McCulloch was thwarted by Rousset in the 33rd minute.

After the break it was more of the same with Motherwell close again two minutes after the break.

Brannan combined with Pat Nevin and the veteran's delicately-chipped cross was headed against the post by McCulloch.

Nevin also headed wide, while Hearts' Colin Cameron came close to extending their lead in the 72nd minute.

The equaliser came in the 83rd minute when Ben Kemble delivered a glorious long through ball for McMillan on the left.

His cross was controlled by Spencer and although keeper Rousset got a touch the ball spun agonisingly over him into the net.

Sub Derek Townsley then wasted a glorious opportunity at the death to steal all three points for the visitors when he shot straight at Rousset after being sent through.

Teams:

Hearts: Rousset, Pressley, Naysmith, Locke, Ritchie, Fulton, Cameron, Jackson, Murray, McSwegan, Adam. Subs: McKenzie, Flogel, Makel, Juanjo, Severin.

Motherwell: Woods, Doesburg, McMillan, Teale, Kemble, Brannan, Spencer, Valakari, Nevin, McCulloch, Twaddle. Subs: Brown, McGowan, Nicholas, Harvey, Townsley.
