Violence mars Euro friendly

Violence marred a friendly match between the two co-hosts of Euro 2000 football tournament, Belgium and the Netherlands.
As the close rivals clawed their way to a 2-2 draw in Brussels, fans made their own headlines. Brussels police spokesman Jean-Louis Begine said 50 Dutch fans were arrested for disorder, violence and drug possession. He said the police regarded this figure as "relatively low". The game was played at the King Baudouin stadium, which was re-named after it was the scene of one of most tragic incidents in European football. In 1985, when it was known as the Heysel stadium, 39 Italian and Belgian Juventus ans died when a wall collapsed following a stampede by Liverpool fans.
Wednesday's incident will deepen concerns about security for Euro 2000 in Belgium, which is still troubled by the memory of Heysel.
The Belgian authorities were looking at the match as a final security test run for the tournament, which kicks off at the stadium on 10 June. In the match, Belgium were ahead with two goals in the first half-hour from Gert Verheyen and Emile Mpenza before Patrick Kluivert struck in the 32nd minute and then equalised in the 82nd minute. Last year's memorable match between the two teams resulted in a 5-5 draw. |
