Charlton put record on line
The Football League is guaranteed at least one FA Cup semi-finalist with promotion-chasing Charlton meeting cup specialists Bolton in Saturday's first quarter-final. The match at Bolton's Reebok Stadium sees the visitors attempt to win a twelfth game in succession.
The last time Charlton failed to win a first team match was before Christmas, a run which is already a club record.
For Bolton the match represents a second chance this season to reach Wembley where this year's semi-finals will be held. The Lancashire club have already lost a Worthington Cup last four tie against Tranmere. And the in-form Football League leaders will provide a stern test for Wanderers, currently 10th in the first division.
The home side's cup bid is boosted by the return of two key players from international duty.
South African Mark Fish helped his side finish in third place in the recent African Cup of Nations, and has not played for his club for over a month. Jamaican Ricardo Gardner is back from the Concacaf Gold Cup following his country's surprise first-round exit. Bolton boss Sam Allardyce is confident Bolton will benefit from a three-day training excursion to a mystery hideaway this week. "The atmosphere in the camp is fantastic," said Allardyce. "Everyone is eager to get stuck into Charlton. "We went away this week to train somewhere where no-one could get at us and we made sure we were focused on the job. It was all geared up for the cup game."
Paul Warhurst is out with a long-term hamstring injury, while Gareth
Farrelly is suspended.
Dean Holdsworth and Eidur Gudjohnsen should start up front, although manager Sam Allardyce has Bob Taylor and Bo Hansen waiting in the wings. Charlton boss Alan Curbishley's big decision is whether or not to recall skipper Mark Kinsella, who has missed the last three matches with a stomach virus. "Mark played 80 minutes of a reserve game on Wednesday but that was his first football for three weeks, so we shall have to see if he is strong enough to start against Bolton," said Curbishley.
"But he is my captain and the mainstay
of the team, so there is no question of him not playing if he thinks he is up to it."
Charlton's nine successive league wins sandwich a fantastic cup comeback at Coventry and Curbishley says his side enjoy the break from the promotion pressure. "The difference between this and a normal league game will be the atmosphere," said Curbishley. "We obviously knew it was a cup game at Coventry in the last round, but when we came out we realised it was a cup game by the atmosphere and what the fans made it. "We go back to Bolton in the league in two weeks and the games will be two different atmospheres completely." |
