Newcastle blunt Blades

Shearer Alan Shearer adds to his tally for the season

Newcastle 4-1 Sheffield Utd

Kevin Gallacher scored his first goal for Newcastle United as Bobby Robson's men cruised into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 4-1 victory over First Divsion side Sheffield United.

59 mins: Ferguson smashes in third
69 mins: Gallacher completes rout
The Magpies suffered some early scares, but after being held 1-1 at half-time, they took control of the game in the second half to end the visitors' cup dreams.

It all looked rosy for Newcastle when they took the lead after just five minutes, captain Alan Shearer heading home a Nolberto Solano corner from the left.

But after 17 minutes the Blades took advantage of some slack defending to equalise.

Dabizas Nikos Dabizas bundled in the second goal for Newcastle
Midfielder Jonathan Hunt sent a curling ball into the Newcastle 18 yard-box which fell to the feet of striker Martin Smith and the former Sunderland player made no mistake, poking the ball past Newcastle keeper Steve Harper to level the scores.

If Newcastle's fans were worried at the break, they were relieved to see their team take immediate control of the match.

Greek defender Nikos Dabizas made it 2-1 to Newcastle a minute after half-time with a close range header.

And Newcastle's passage into the fifth round was virtually assured in the 59th minute when Duncan Ferguson side-footed home after fine build-up play from Gary Speed and Alessandro Pistone.

Veteran Scottish striker Gallacher then completed the rout 10 minutes later, with a well-struck shot from a Shearer lay-off.
