Shay Given: Denied the Rams victory at the death
Derby 0-0 Newcastle

Derby County are assured of a place in next year's Premiership after a turgid draw against Newcastle at Pride Park.

The Rams celebrated avoiding the drop, having needed a draw with the Magpies to ensure the remained in the top flight. As it was, results elsewhere rendered the result meaningless.

Lucky Lee

Derby controlled the match for long periods of this dull game, and it was a testament to Newcastle keeper Shay Given's powers of concentration that he managed an inspired stop to deny Deon Burton the winner just before the final whistle.

It was a different story to the start of the match when only shear luck kept the ball out of the Magpies' net.

A display of solo wizardry after eight minutes saw Giorgi Kinkladze burst clear and chip the onrushing Given, only for the ball to glance off the underside of the bar without crossing the line.

Former England player Rob Lee was booked for a thumping tackle on the Georgian that led to him being taken off at half time by Rams boss Jim Smith.

Ketsbaia blast

Lee was lucky to avoid a sending off for shirt-tugging on Kinkladze and another hard tackle, this time on Burton.

His crude message clearly got through and Derby were a much less potent attacking force after the interval.

That said, Newcastle lacked inspiration too, with Alan Shearer giving Mart Poom very little to think about all afternoon.

The visitors' best chance came courtesy of Temuri Ketsbaia, whose shot slammed into Stefan Schnoor's stomach, felling him instantly.

On balance, Derby had the best of the day and Newcastle can consider themselves lucky that the Rams did not book a place in next year's Premiership with three instead of just one point.

Derby: Poom, Laursen, Carbonari, Schnoor, Dorigo, Burley, Powell, Murray, Kinkladze, Christie, Burton.
Subs: Oakes, Sturridge, Bohinen, Jackson, Elliott.

Newcastle: Given, Barton, Dabizas, Hughes, Solano, Dyer, Lee, Speed, Pistone, Shearer, Ketsbaia.
Subs: Karelse, Domi, Gavilan, Maric, Gallacher.

Referee: A Wiley (Burntwood)
