The proposed British record transfer of PSV Eindhoven striker Ruud van Nistelrooy to Manchester United has been put on hold.

In a statement issued on Thursday afternoon, the English champions said: "Manchester United is very disappointed that the transfer of Ruud van Nistelrooy from PSV Eindhoven cannot proceed at the present time."

Earlier it emerged the 18.5m transfer was hanging in the balance after the striker and PSV Eindhoven refused to meet Manchester United's extra demands over tests on the player's injured knee.

It had been suggested that United wanted to monitor van Nistelrooy's fitness further before committing themselves to the deal.

The statement continued: "As reported on Tuesday further tests were necessary for Manchester United to proceed with the transfer.

"The discussions that have been held between all parties failed to reach agreement as to the extent of these tests and, as a result of these differences in opinion, we cannot proceed at the present time."

But United kept alive hopes that the deal could yet go through, adding: "Manchester United wish Ruud every success with his rehabilitation programme and will continue to monitor the situation very closely in order to achieve our desire to make him a Manchester United player."

PSV and van Nistelrooy however, are unhappy with this condition and the Dutch club say the transfer has hit an "impasse".

PSV spokesman Pedro Salazar-Hewitt said: "PSV and Ruud van Nistelrooy cannot agree to the additional conditions which Manchester United have requested for the completion of the transfer of Ruud to Manchester at this moment.

"Ruud does not agree to these conditions because they will put in danger his rehabilitation at this moment.

"He just wants to get on with his rehabilitation and he has been doing very well.

"At this moment the transfer is at an impasse."
