Wanchope dashes Derby hopes
Paulo Wanchope
Wanchope was on song for West Ham
Derby 1-2 West Ham

Paulo Wanchope returned to his old stamping ground and grabbed two goals to give West Ham victory at Pride Park.

He scored his 14th goal of the season on 14 minutes and added a second in the 31st minute - both goals courtesy of poor Derby defending.

After the match his manager Harry Redknapp paid tribute to Wanchope.

He said: "If Wanchope finishes with 17 or 18 goals I will be pleased.

The crowd were a bit hostile towards Wanchope today but nothing fires him, not even a rocket up his backside

West Ham manager Harry Redknapp

Any striker in the Premiership would be happy with that.

"People don't know how strong he is. They don't like playing against him. He used to frighten me to death when he played for Derby, he has that affect on people.

"The crowd were a bit hostile towards him today but nothing fires him, not even a rocket up his backside. He's so laid back."

Derby thought they had equalised two minutes after West Ham's first goal when Dean Sturridge found the net after a shot from Craig Burley had been spilled by keeper Ian Feuer but the referee ruled for an infringement.

The home side were able to grab a consolation goal through Dean Sturridge in the 84th minute.

Teams:

Derby: Poom, Laursen, Elliott, Schnoor, Delap, Eranio, Powell, Burley, Johnson, Sturridge, Strupar. Subs: Oakes, Dorigo, Christie, Robinson, Murray.

West Ham: Feuer, Ferdinand, Stimac, Margas, Minto, Cole, Foe, Lampard, Sinclair, Wanchope, Di Canio. Subs: Bywater, Keller, Charles, Carrick, A. Newton.

Referee: M Halsey (Welwyn Garden City)
