Sol: Red tape ruining Spurs
Spurs' Worthington Cup
Spurs captain Campbell holds the Worthington Cup aloft
Tottenham captain Sol Campbell has hit out at the club's hierarchy for a lack of silverware.

Campbell insists manager George Graham is not to blame for Tottenham's absence of trophies and instead points the finger at the White Hart Lane hierarchy for holding back the club.

During Graham's first season Spurs won the Worthington Cup but this season the team has been poor in the league and the cup competitions.

And many Spurs fans have turned on Graham for his failure to sign any proven international-class players.

Campbell said: "It's pretty much out of the manager's hands.

"The managerial system is split. It's in the hands of different people and different departments.
George Graham
Graham: Under fire from fans
"There's a lot of red tape. I don't know if it's finances or certain people's attitudes that are holding us back.

"I just hope the right people wake up and realise.

"We've gone forward in little spurts but nobody is prepared to follow it through.

"It is like if you get engaged and then have cold feet and do not get married.

"Everyone at the club has to get on the same wavelength - it's as simple as that."

The England defender has been linked with a move to Manchester United, but is still willing to negotiate an extension to his contract, which is due to end in the summer of 2001.

Sugar: Campbell blames hierarchy
"We are going to talk again at the end of the season. I've said that from day one and kept my side of the bargain," said Campbell.

"I want this club to do well but there's a gap between us and the top sides.

"We need to close it not let it open up further. It's within the club's capabilities but attitudes must change."
