Anderton signs new Spurs deal

England midfielder Darren Anderton has signed a one-year extension to his contract at Tottenham.
Anderton's future at White Hart Lane has been the subject of debate for most of the season as he pursued a deal reported to be worth £24,000 a week. The two parties finally came to an agreement on Thursday as the deadline approached for domestic transfers. Anderton ranks alongside Frenchman David Ginola, as two of the club's highest-paid players. Under the Bosman ruling, 28-year-old Anderton could have left Spurs on a free transfer when his current deal expired in the summer. Spurs believe Anderton, who returned to action in January after a four-month Achilles injury, can help their drive to finish in the Premiership top six in order to qualify for European competition. "We are now looking to him to put in a closing run until the end of the season and regain his England place," said director of football David Pleat. "Darren knows that to achieve those ends he must play regularly and play well. He is in a very positive mood about the future."
