Owen leads Liverpool home

Derby's Elliott is shrugged aside by Heskey
Derby 0-2 Liverpool

Liverpool kept up the chase for a Champions League place with a convincing victory over Derby at Pride Park.

Michael Owen led the way with a low shot after 17 minutes.

And after the England striker departed late on, his replacement Titi Camara wrapped up the win with a second goal four minutes from time.

The Rams were dominated by an excellent team performance from Gerard Houllier's men.

Key moments
17: Owen nets first goal of 2000
30: Strupar fires at Westerveld
67: Derby's Belgian does it again
86: Camara puts match beyond doubt
Owen's goal saw him receive a magnificent cross-field pass from Sami Hyypia before wrongfooting the Rams defence.

He then fired clinically into the corner of the net to goalkeeper Mart Poom's right.

It was by no means the England striker's only chance and he fired narrowly wide after a through ball from Patrik Berger.

The opening period also saw the 20-year-old striker shoot straight at Poom following an Emile Heskey flick.

Owen also attempted an audacious effort from the left side of the box which sailed narrowly over.

Giorgi Kinkladze posed the biggest threat for Derby but Branko Strupar could not capitalise on his through ball and shot straight at keeper Sander Westerveld.

After that chance the first period was dominated by Liverpool with the superb Stephen Gerrard almost setting up Heskey's first Liverpool goal from a free-kick.

Struper waste

Derby had a chance to make Liverpool pay for the missed chances after 67 minutes when Seth Johnson crossed from the left.

But Strupar, directly in front of goal, headed straight at Westerveld.

Liverpool made the game safe when substitute Camara scored his brilliant second with four minutes left.

Played in by an excellent cross from Dominic Matteo, the African forward evaded the challenge of Horacio Carbonari and fired calmly to Poom's right.

Berger ought to have made it three in injury time when he was put clear by Camara but his first touch let him down.

Teams:

Derby:
Poom, Carbonari, Powell, Johnson, Delap, Laursen, Elliott, Kinkladze, Eranio, Christie, Strupar. Subs: Oakes, Schnoor, Sturridge, Prior, Robinson.

Liverpool: Westerveld, Henchoz, Hyypia, Matteo, Carragher, Thompson, Gerrard, Berger, Hamann, Owen, Heskey. Subs: Staunton, Redknapp, Meijer, Friedel, Camara.
