Mark Hughes: Joined Everton at the grand age of 36
Wales manager Mark Hughes has completed his move from Southampton to Everton and is expected to make his debut against Coventry on Wednesday.

Everton's offer came like a bolt out of the blue and it was an opportunity I couldn't turn down.

The former Manchester United star, who was unveiled at Everton's training ground on Tuesday morning, has singed a 14-month contract.

Everton manager Walter Smith decided to move for the 36-year-old because of an injury crisis surrounding his strikers.

Both Kevin Campbell and Francis Jeffers are currently sidelined, leaving Smith short of numbers up front.

Hughes fact-file
1983: Made debut for Man Utd.
1984: Scored on international debut for Wales v Eng.
1985: Won FA Cup as Utd beat Everton 1-0.
1986: Joined Barcelona for £2.3m.
1988: Signed again for Man Utd for £1.8m.
1995: Hughes signed for Chelsea for £1.5m.
1999: Appointed Wales manager.
The Everton manager believes Hughes' experience could prove to be a crucial factor in the remaining weeks of the season.

Hughes joins a number of senior players at Goodison with Dave Watson, Richard Gough and John Collins already on board.

Smith said: "Mark is one of these players who has trained hard and avoided serious injury in his career and we are delighted he is here.

"I'm looking on him to have a big influence on the team and he will play on a regular basis."

"Everton's offer came like a bolt out of the blue and it was an opportunity I couldn't turn down," Hughes said.

"I knew I wouldn't have got much of a chance for the rest of the season at Southampton and I can hardly believe it has come."

Hughes is in his 20th year as a pro, having joined Manchester United as an apprentice.

He left Old Trafford in 1995, joining Chelsea for £1.5m before moving to Southampton three years later.
