Hammers track Sheringham

Teddy Sheringham Sheringham scored the equaliser against Arsenal last week

West Ham manager Harry Redknapp has admitted he is considering making a bid for Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham.

The former England frontman is involved in contract talks with the Old Trafford giants, but is thought to be unhappy with his inability to hold down a regular first team place.

Redknapp is keen to increase his side's firepower
And with West Ham struggling to find a reliable goalscorer to play alongside Paolo Di Canio, Redknapp has expressed an interest in the 33-year-old.

"Teddy is a class act and I've got to be interested in someone of his calibre," Redknapp told the Daily Mail.

Sheringham's goals helped United win the FA Cup and Euroean Cup finals during their triumphant Treble campaign last season.

But he has struggled to claim a place in the United team this season and is behind Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole in the pecking order up front.

Contract wrangles

The news of West Ham's interest came after United confirmed they had begun contract talks with Sheringham.

United chairman Martin Edwards spoke to Sheringham's agent, Barry Nevill, last week about a new deal for the former Millwall, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham player who is out of contract in the summer.

Nevill would not comment on the negotiations because of the delicate nature of the talks.

"All I can say is that discussions have started," he commented.
