Cottee double denies Dons
Little and large: Emile Heskey (left) celebrates with Foxes' goalscorer Cottee

Leicester 2-1 Wimbledon

Tony Cottee scored a goal in each half as Leicester came from behind to win.

The veteran striker netted seconds after Marcus Gayle had opened the scoring in the first period.

He made sure of all three points after the break to end the recent Wimbledon revival and maintain Leicester's unbeaten home record.

Tony has been staggering for us. He is surprising us all but he just keeps going.
Martin O'Neill
With Cottee now 34 O'Neill is believed to be seeking a replacement despite his eight goals this season.

But the former British record signing is clearly in no mood to give up his place without a fight.

He came within inches of a deserved hat-trick when his injury-time shot beat Wimbledon keeper Neil Sullivan but flashed just past the post.

But the power in the air and pace of Emile Heskey combined with the movement and clinical finishing of Cottee were always a problem for the Dons.

Foxes manager Martin O'Neill gets a bit hot under the collar
Andrew Impey supplied a string of threatening right-wing centres while the competitiveness of Rob Savage helped to compensate for injured Muzzy Izzet's absence.

Yet it was the Dons who took the lead after a dull opening 20 minutes with a splendid goal from Gayle.

Robbie Earle played a lob over the Leicester defence into the path of the striker, who he timed his volley to perfection across Tim Flowers and into the corner of the net.

58: Veteran seals the points
The Foxes only needed 60 seconds to get back on level terms as Heskey sent over a deep left-wing centre which Savage headed back into the path of Cottee.

He needed no second invitation as he turned the ball past Sullivan from close range.

Gayle came close to restoring Wimbledon's lead before the break but Steve Guppy could have put the home side ahead before the break.

I have not seen a team play so penetratingly in the Premiership as Leicester but I still felt we deserved a draw.

The England squad man started the move which led to the 58th-minute winner with a curling ball down the line in the direction of Heskey.

Dean Blackwell slipped and the big striker was allowed to race unchallenged into the penalty area before squaring the ball to Cottee who slid home from eight yards out.

Tempers became a little frayed off the pitch with O'Neill appearing to have words in the Wimbledon dug-out with coach Ray Harford.

On the field Wimbledon tried to rally and Cort volleyed over from 10 yards.

But Leicester held on to make it 20 points out of 24 at Filbert Street.
