Silvestre relishing Old Trafford future

Mickael Silvestre: Likely to make his decision on Tuesday

French defender Mickael Silvestre is set to complete his 4m move from Inter Milan to Manchester United this week - and he is desperate to make a mark on English football.

He said: "I'm going to answer my critics by showing exactly what I can do on the pitch.

"There were problems last season and I was criticised but a lot of time I was played out of position.

"Now I'm just looking forward to joining United and I don't believe I'm going there just to sit on the bench."

Silvestre, a central defender or left back, is currently on international duty with the French Under-21 squad.

An Inter spokesman confirmed that Liverpool had also made an offer for the defender but that the Italian club had accepted a higher bid from United.

On Monday, the Italian media reported that United had offered 4m for the defender, outbidding Liverpool whose French manager Gerard Houllier is a long-standing admirer of Silvestre.

Silvestre, who began his career with Rennes in France, made 18 Serie A appearances for Inter last season but his chances look to be limited this season following the arrival of Greek international left back Grigorios Georgatos.
